Chern, I think this idea has a lot of merit--in most aspects.

I like the idea that all turns are at 45, and that eahc ship gets a stat indicating how far it can move--I think this woudl be an excellent way to simulate actual ship movement.

Madatory drift with penalites to hit rolls is also a vast improvement over what we have now--it might mean that that crit alone could lead to removing the vessel from play--it slids off the table.

I do not particularily liekt eh idea of an agile trait--if a ship is that agile its space between movement should be adjusted, not given a special trait.

I don't think a driftign ship shoudl be forbidden all SA's--defeinitley some like CAF, Come about and All stop--the ship has lost control of its engines, but I don't see why it cann't close blast doors or send all hads to the deck?

Finally, although you don't discuss it, what I don't undertand is why a ship cann't fire on a turn it does all stop and pivit? (sp?) It has taken its engines off line and is now using that power to turn itelf oon a dime--as has been ponted out manouvering thusters are different that main engines.

Mu solution to All stop and Pivit woudl be to allow the ship to fire but permit it only up to a 90 deg (maybe 135) turn. Basically allow it to function normally, but keep teh ship form beign able to spin liek a top and becoem a giant stationary gun turrnet.

Well, if we follow that the "come about" reduces the turn number by say, 2, rather than 1, then a white star could get something silly like 7 turns. I don't think the number of turns should get quite that high. So I was proposing a "stopgap" measure of allowing one of the turns to be 90 degrees to keep its "turn number" under control.

Or, alternatively, the "come about" special action could simply give the ship the "agile" trait for this turn, allowing the ship to make a 90 degree turn in place of a 45. In this circumstance, ships that are already agile might have their turn number reduced by 1.

Drifting would be better than spped 0. Might have to have a drift speed for all ships eg All ships drift 3" or something. Any ship that goes 3' or less could be boarded.
Like the idea of come about reducing the which can make a turn. The Agility stat im guessing is the would the range Vree SM could move.

Well, I figure vree either keep the SM trait or make all turns at up to 90...it would have to be a fleet special rule.

You might also want to include being available for Mass Drivers too.

What if you simply state that the first turn can only be made after moving half the original speed. That would stop the concerns about a ship taking a critical and becoming more maneuverable. It also means you don't have to constantly recalculate for each shift in speed.

I'm thinking this might not be such a bad idea after all. Ships could be given a turn number - simply to represent how maneuverable a ship is. no number of turns, or different angle (no 2/45 or 2/90) instead make ALL turns up to 45 degrees, and your turn number represents how far you must move between turns.

"Come about" would reduce the turn number by a certain amount.
"All power to engines" would increase the turn number by a certain amount, or remove turns entirely as it does now.
"All stop" lowers minimum movement, but not your turn number.
so a white star, with speed 15, might have a turn number of 5, or 4...
an omega, with speed 7, might have a turn number of 4 also.

create a new ship trait "Agile" these ships can make a 90 degree turn (once per game turn) instead of a 45 degree turn.

Sounds like someone has been dipping into the AoG Wars system.

[Edit: Not that I have a problem with it, Wars has an interesting take on handling inertia and controlling maneuverability!]
