Magnetic Harpoons and Assault Barracks

Golan2072

Cosmic Mongoose
The Magnetic Harpoon listed on p.82 of Signs and Portents #57 has a listed range of Short, which, according to the main book's p.146, is up to 1,250 km. Now, as this weapon is TL7, it looks to me like slow-moving missiles carrying magnetic grapples as their secondary load and carrying a cable connected to the launching ship (rather than higher-tech tractor beams). As such a weapon, the range of Short seems a bit long; wouldn't Close or even Adjacent be more fitting?

The same article and page also has an Assault Barracks, 5dtons and costing 600,000: "An assault barracks houses double the normal occupancy". Does it means that it carries normal double occupancy (2 persons), or double the normal double occupancy (4 persons total)?

Because they called it a Barracks and not a suite, I assumed it held 4 people. But I admit I read into it based on the words they used.

So, the Repti are a Major Race (in the article it say that they invented their jump system.), will we see more of them? Have I missed them somewhere?

They would seem to be a worthy opponent, similar to the AAnn in the Alan Dean Foster Flinx & Pip books.

Excellent, Mr. Steele. I look forward to it! Any chance you could give us a general description? From the name I took them to be reptilian but that could be way off. Are the desert or swamp evolved? Cold blood or warm blood?

If I get a chance to put some more Reptii stuff in S&P, I will! :)

Cool, though I am gonna move them down past the Solomani Confed....

That and i have 15 mm figures for big reptiles.

Did it say anywhere in the article that Reptii are reptilian? Or is the name a bit misleading and they are something else - such as mantis-like insectoids? :P

That's ok I got figures for those too, but I just skimed the article this morning. I missed that.....

They would have to be *really* recent, or they would have showed up in the Coyns.

That gives rise to an interesting way to put a PC group on the trail of the Ancients: Two consecutive visits to a Droyne world show that the Coyns have changed and now include the (still unnamed and unknown) Reptii, and that the Droyne "didn't notice". Only later does word come via the usual methods that a new Major Race has been encountered...

That is a great idea. Spooky, but great. :D

You guys are giving me lots of really good ideas for more Reptii stuff. I do think I might need to shake Matt's tree and see if I can get a greenlight for a whole Reptii series of stuff in S&P.

Hmmm.....

As "purveyor of the OTU" Mongoose will need to be cautious about what it prints for Traveller. One of the worst points of departure for GURPS Traveller was the introduction of one person's menagerie of home campaign races, more than a couple of which were potential setting breakers.

As such, my advice to Mongoose would be to adopt clear tags or labels for Traveller articles that identify whether an article is considered Official Traveller Universe material, or is just material that uses the Traveller mechanics. Possibly adopt the recent WotC practice of finishing an article with sections on "Using this material in the OTU/MongooseSpace/SST/B5/etc".

I think this is a good point. I am interested in this as an idea, but Mongoose should take care to ID things like a new major race for example, as unofficial or ATU ideas.

I know what we do right now is specifically label anything that is OTU as OTU...everything else is "add if you want to" or "Generispace".

Great, so back to the race: It might be interesting to also share some history of this race. Where did man first meet this race (or have they  )? Have they had interactions with any of the other Major races? Are they an old race or relatively new?

Daniel

I will need to work these things out better to you (right now they are little more than a bad reptillian sketch and some incomprehensible notes) when I have some more to add. :)
