Legend Combat question

But, if two people of equal skill fight and the other one is significantly smarter and/or faster, then of course the other guy will be in trouble...? Anything else would be silly.
Yes, I wasn't trying to come at it from a position of "defending my position" so much as just laying it all out on the table. I'm less concerned with the realism of the situation than of the gamist response to it, where no player would actively want to only have two inherent CAs. It remains to be seen just how it plays out for me in tests when there's a 2CA fighter with a 2H weapon versus a 2CA fighter with weapon and shield (for 3 CA total), and then again against a 3CA fighter with weapon and shield (4 CA total).

...instead of viewing an attack vs. parry merely as a strike against a blocking object, view it as a cumulative test of one warriors skill against another. Small feints, footwork, small dodges combined with a block etc. are all a part of this matching of skill. It need necessarily not be strict attack vs. parry or dodge.
I think this does a lot towards explaining why I'm having such a hard time wrapping my brain around this - it may be that Legend is a system that produces realistic results, but has too high a level of abstraction for my personal, pedantic, tastes.

Definitely run a few combats first. A lot of posters on the forum had 'issues' getting their heads around how combat works from a strictly hypothetical view. Once you you have actually played it out things begin to make a lot more sense.

As has been previously mentioned, the higher the number of CA the better, but it is possible to have viable characters with only 2 CA. Obviously, they will have to pick and choose fights and tactics to increase their survival rate - and possibly burn a number of Hero Points (which from a GM POV is not a bad thing  ).

There are still issues - we have been playing Clockwork for a fair time now - most enjoyable.

However odd things still arise, like the old problems with CAs and Combat Styles and MOOks. But then no system is perfect!
