Late commer

Hi everyone,

Sorry I'm late... ;)

Just realised this was close to release a week ago.

I have read through the v3.2 document now 15 times.

A couple of issues you guys might be able to clear out for me. Most of them are "proof reading" stuff and not really a complaint about mechanics (I hope, but some times that depends on the answer you give ofcourse.) know this is a playtest document and probably not that closely monitored in a proof reading way, that's ok. I'm just worried that some of these issues might slip through the net and be printed in the final product and that would not be good.

Then again, I know I'm late... so if it's too late I apologize for wasting your time.

1. When a Skill have specializations, can you ever get more than 0 in the "main" skill ? The reason I'm asking is that sometimes it says "Melee 1" and sometimes "Melee (any) 1" in the skill table, and I'm wondering if there's really any difference between the two (Other examples exist, Gunnery, Engineering etc. sometimes it says "(any)" and sometimes not.

Reading through the two sections about skill specailizations available in one place it feels like I must pick a specialization, in the other it says I "may"... so what gives?

2. Some career's Mishap tables are referring to a "Medical Emergency Table" while others are referring to a "Injury Table". Is there a difference? There's now "Medical Emergency Table" in the document... so?

3. In the "Ranks & Skills Tables" all skill increases for ALL Careers are listed in the "Skill 1" format. The Exception here is Entertainer... for the Entertainer this Table is in the "Skill" fromat... meaning it's a +1 increase regardless of current skill rank. Is this intentional? (I have to ask since it deviates from the norm)

4. Despite your clear and brilliant explanation on how to read the skill formats on page 4, There is one case I have to ask about. the "Skill 2" format (or any other digit than 0 or 1) I understand it perfectly... but it never happens. So it's a little confusing having it there at all. The only instance I could find where something is increased to a set value like this is Soc 10 for Navy... but Soc is a Characteristic, not a skill... so...

5. Some Careers lists "Science" as a skill... (example: Entertainer) Since Science is not a skill in itself I'm guessing this means "Any Science" ? OR should you get skill rank 0 in ALL Science skills? Maybe it should even say "Any Science (any)" to include the specialization? (Depending on your answer to question 1)

6. Character generation Check List on page 2-3, Step 6c where you failed a survival roll, is a little whacky. Since you've been forced from your career you should NOT go to step 5 for a nother 4 year term. And if you want to retire you should NOT go to step 12 and finalize your character.

The options should instead be; "go to step 10 to muster out and roll for benefits."

After that step 11 will direct you to either pick a new career or finalize the character.

I also find it irritating how skills are sometimes "Gunner" and sometimes "Gunnery", Sometimes "Gambler" sometimes "Gambling" etc.

Pick one and STICK with it.

Well, I'll take a crack at them...

1. When you get Skill level >1 you HAVE to specialize in one of the specialties. If you get a second level of that skill, you can pick a different specialty or double up your first. You get 1/2 your highest skill level in all other specialties. Although there is some disagreement that this should be allowed.

Melee-1 and Melee(any)-1 are the same thing. Standardization of text is something to be done outside of the play test.

2. Medical Emergency Table and Injury Table are the same. The name changed between drafts and didn't get fixed everywhere.

3. Entertainer is messed up. There was a lot of discussion earlier about how it should be handled, I don't know how Gar resolved it.

4. When you roll on a skill table, you get +1 skill, so it is very possible if you roll on the same table multiple times, you can get skill-2 or higher.

5. Science it supposed to be a category of skills, like Space. You pick any one of the Science skills that you want. This is confusing because Science went from a skill with specialties, to several separate skills, to a category of several skills that have specialties. Gar is cleaning this up once he decides which way to go with Science (and Entertainer).

6. Yeah the checklist is messed up in it's references. That will be fixed.

6.5 AGREED. That has also been pointed out, pick a way to refer to a skill and stick with it. Gar is working on it. This was a playtest Draft, so he said at the beginning there would be things like this in the text.

As an end result it is possible to get a skill of rank higher than 1, yes, I know, several "Skill" format increases will do that.

But the example mentioned says "Skill 2" format, And there is no such result to get on any table roll. All tables have results "Skill" or "Skill 1". In one place I think there is ecen an example talking about a "Skill 0" Format... but you cannot see that in any table either. Sure when you get your "background skills" and Basic training" ituses this format so I guess that is one way to read it.

Thank you for all your answers. Apreciated.

Quoting myself here I know... but still

The Preview PDF still has this bug... makes me sad and gives me low expectations about the quality of Proof Reading once again.
