Lankhmar Unleashed review

The review is encouraging I'm really tempted by this one. But the reviewer did not know Lankhmar's previous RQ incarantion. Does anyone know how it compares to the previous version in terms of content?

Well it's basically Lankhmar + the first half of Nehwon with a better organisation and a clearer description of the city, a few more spells, maps and plot hooks, and a new adventure. The new adventure is nothing to write home about ; it's also a pity that it doesn't take place in Lankhmar.
Irritating detail, the mistakes of the world map haven't been corrected : it still has the very Midkemian city "Carse" on it !
The layout of the book is subpar : the margins aren't as huge as before, which is a good thing, but a lot of the maps and the artwork are pixellized.

The additions are good but not breathtaking, so if you already have Lankhmar and Nehwon, it certainly isn't a mandatory purchase.

Being the Lankhmar completist that I am, I had already ordered it. Certainly what you say about the maps and the book in general is a bit of a letdown.

LOL! I knew very well that fan made mapo on the net. When I realised that the map "artist" of the MRQ book had copied that I had a good laugh. Carse I don't mind too much. I have the Mikdemian citybook and I might use one day in my version of Newhon. Unfortunately there are several other errors and omissions on the map - which BTW does not match the text.

The original didn't have rules for familiars such as Slivikin. Does the updated version?

Slivikin rocks - the little bastard. Rules for familiars would be quite fitting the setting.

In fact, there were many holes in the magic department in the old book. For one, I don't like the approach used for hedge wizards. They are basically treated as fortune tellers, who might or might not have magic power.

Actually, Leiber in the 'Unholy Grail' story describes hedge magic spells, and they are not limited to fortune telling. Hedge magic is described as slow, and certainly weak compared to black magic, but it "works" to some extent. For instance, the spell cast by the Mouse to make Duke Jannarl's hunters lose their direction is described in detail and actually works, protecting the Mouse for days.

I find this map-thing really ... sad. I mean if it is a know fact that the map is a rip-off and RP gamers really love maps then why not get a proper map? Personally I could not see how the map is wrong etc. but knowing it from the others bothers me to some extent...

Is there any changes in the book to conform to MRQII or is it basically a reprint of the previous material? Meaning is character generation the same and are there changes in the monster stats to reflect the changes mentioned in the State of the Mongoose?

I asked about this some time ago and I remember that the answer was that Lankhmar Unleashed is compatible with RQII straight out of the box.

Thanks, but I know that. The product description says it's compatible with MRQ and MRQII. What I want to know is is there a change in any of the stat write ups to conform with MRQII or is it just a reprint of the old Lankmar books? So can anyone familiar with the original books and the new book let me know?

I bought the book today to have a ready setting when I buy the RQII at the next year :) I had the original Lankhmar but not the Nehwon so I managed to convince myself to buy it :)

As I didn't have a chance to read it, yet I can't give a really educated answer (as I have the original book stored, ATM).

Anyway, it seemed that for example combat skills had two entries without any explanations (I don't remember if this was the case in original Mongoose Lankhmar). Otherwise I think that stat blocks are a bit larger than before but I could be wrong. I have to get the old book back from the storage to compare.

I didn't have a chance to go and get my old book but I took a better look at the Lankhmar Unleashed book. It has skill lists for RQ and RQ2 (even stated so).
