Lack of SST at UK show

Hi guys
Just a quick observation.
This weekend I went to the old glory / worlds show in Derby, England UK.
I was somewhat saddened to see that only 2 stalls out of all the traders some 60+ had any SST stock. :(
Of these 2, one had a box set (rules and MI etc) the other had 2 packs of MI wasps, a brain bug and king tanker. Both stalls were selling the stuff off at least 25% off.
I remember going to the same show 2 years ago and SST stock was everywhere.

Kind of sad I think for a game that has so much to offer.

The other thing that shocked me were the number of traders selling GW stock at 20-25% off.
 
Many companies sell GW stuff at such a reduced price to get people to buy it because the prices are usually quite bad. Normally not this much off though!

Its a sign of the times . . . .

I was discussing it with my Gaming Group (just before I destroyed my oppo at Rezolution Lol), and its across the board.

The whole 'hobby' industry seems very depressed at the moment.

Not in the US. Not if you play Warmachine, Hordes or FOW anyway. 40K is also VERY strong with people tooling up their armies for Apocalypse.
 
Unfortunately, you can't judge the state of US gaming by what's happening in California.

Where I am right now nobody even carries Warmachine or FoW anymore, and the handfull of stores that have 40K can't give the stuff away (two 40K stores went under last year). There's actually a store located 50 feet from two huge colleges and they are even struggling. It's just not a great time for gaming right now.

At my LGS the only things selling at all are Axis and Allies minis and D&D 3.5 stuff because everyone wants to get all their books before the new edition comes out (no one seems real enthused about 4.0). I think it's just a sign of the times. :cry:

But surely it also follows that you cant judge the state of US gaming by Pensalvania :D
(That is what PA is isn't it? Thanks to the state of british education I was given the choice of history OR geography at school :D)

I think he was more trying to point out the differences state to state.

Yes, that is PA. Don't worry about the spelling. Most of the kids with a Pennsylvanian education can't get it right! LOL

Actually, Lt. was correct in that I was just trying to point out the differences from state to state. Honestly though, California does tend to run contrary to the rest of the US market-wise. Also, while things tend to be better than average in CA, I'd say they're worse than average in PA so the truth is probably somewhere in between, but with a tilt more towards PA than California.

How's that for professional market analasys!? LOL

CA is a pretty huge state though to be fair, if its doing well there thats probably as much money coming in as a couple of small EU countries Id imagine :D

Speaking of which, that Armegeddon thing from GW is a stroke of genuis if you ask me!

Since the minatures are now so damned expensive, the only people left playing are those with piles of cash stacked up to the ceiling.
So somehow they've managed to come up with a concept that will get these same rich wargamers to buy EVEN more miniatures for the supersized ruleset.

... I like to imagine Brian May's SpaceMarine chapter verses.. someother celebrety known to have played warhamer/40k at some point in their life's Ork Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaargh! across the lawn of a country estate :D
 
It's totaly MGP's fault.
They said they will release a new Edition and so the traders got rid of their models.
They didn't bring out the new Edition, so no one ordered new models.
Simple logics.

If either they didn't announce their new edition THAT big (and cut off the support for the existing one almost entirely) or would have managed to bring it out, SST's store situation wouldn't look like that.

Also the whole BFE thing did not do well for their reputation.
 
That is why no one stocks SST at the mo. Why should they? Every ones waiting for the pre paints. even MGP are selling the old stuff at 25% discount. untill new stuff is out the only you will get it is on ebay or bring and buys. effectivly this system is dead untill SSt:EVO is released.
 
I don't think so. Death will approach with the simplified/gruelsome SST:Evo rules. I don't know any current player who is willing to use these new "kiddie-rules". Yes, SST needs a (slightly)revised Edition but SST:Evo is the wrong way.
 
My thought exactly too! If something is not broken, don't fix it. If something needs an ADJUSTMENT, don't trash it and start anew with something that's gonna end up to be not that good.
Apart from the die-hard fans, SST is as dead as it can be. With Rackham having four races on the tabletop already with not-too-bad rules and great pre-paints it's gonna be hard for MGP to rise up from the dust.
My friend and I have made up our own set of rules that are greatly working and we're presently starting up a campaign (Bugs versus MI).
MGP f up good, that's my opinion...
It's like someone pulled the plug right in the middle of a great concert. Everybody is left in the dark and leaving. Only a couple of die-hards are waiting in the dark, waiting in vain for the lights to be switched back on...
It's a damn shame...
 
The SPIELEMESSE 07 in Essen/Germany also had not much SST - just two traders had miniatures (Ulisses and Nimmys Horrorladen) - and Ulisses had all their few bugs sold at the 2nd day of 4 (luckily for me with a huge discount).
As I said - you cannot await any sales if there is no product.
 
Sadly MGP took an fresh, innovative, and elegant system and killed it. I love SST and I still play it. But marketing wise, it's dead in the water.

You'd have thought they would have learned about production delays with the first batch of SST. But then they go and shoot their mouth off about a new system and figures months and months before it's ready to go.

Maybe they did us a favor. I'd really don't like the SST Lite they are coming out with. They got one part of the equation right. Simple figures, ie prepaints. Get tons of people into the system fast. Dumbing down the system was the 2nd part they got wrong.

Frankly I really don't see how they can recover/revive the system based on current known plans of MGP. I think I would kill the SST:EVO. Tighten up the rules A LITTLE BIT and relaunch the rules as version 2.0. Offer lots of deals for scouts/outriders whatever to put on demos at clubs, stores, and Cons. Get people interested in the rules again. Then get the damn prepaints out. Don't promise. Don't advertise them until they can be shipped!!!

Oh and retract that comment about "better than 90% of most gamers". All that did was piss off hardcore gamers. You know what, I've been in shops where 75% of the "lead" on the table was unpainted. Tons of kids don't paint their figs. But pissing off the ones that do....stupid.

Anyway I rant cause I care.
