Jump drive size reduction due to tech increase

Theophilus

Mongoose
Just learning the high guard 2022 design rules and I have a question regarding the tech advantage/disadvantage from page 70.

Beowolf free trader. TL12 jump-1, drive 10 tons.
Jump one becomes available at TL9, +3 advantage at TL12.
So I can take 3 size reductions at TL 12 and reduce the size to 7 tons. At 50% cost increase, or stack the advantages and 85%.

Also the "budget" category is not base TL, but "cheaper" design.that is, I can build a regular TL 9 Jump 1 drive, or a cheaper drive with one disadvantage

That sounds right.

Check out @Arkathan 's spreadsheet, it was how I started to figure out the rules. But yes, you are correct. Also, the size reduction adds are the only legal way to reduce a jump drive below 10 tons. But you get better space savings using reduced fuel cost.

At TL10 the Jump 1 drive gets 1 advantage.
Size 10 ton, 10% advantage is 1 ton. Drive takes 9 tons.
Fuel 20 tons. 1 advantage 5% reduction, fuel reduced 1 ton.
Either advantage is 1 ton.
On the TL12 Beowolf trader, 3 reductions.
3 tons drive or 15%/3 tons fuel.

Power plant, fusion8, at TL10 2 advantages.
So, increase power to 88
Reduce size 1.6 to 6.4 tons
Or use a smaller 7 ton plant with 2 advantages power 77?

It's the five tonne overhead that kippers the deal, at the bottom end.

I'm pretty sure it's the only point on the scale, where the numbers are on even keel.

Yes, quite.
Note the cost is the same. You cannot reduce the drive to less than 10 Dt.
For a small tramp trader, a Budget drive is probably better for the bottom line.
HG'22, p16:
A jump drive must be a minimum of 10 tons and they cost MCr1.5 per ton.

Here, the cost isn't the same...
The smaller base tonnage of the Power Efficient plant is cheaper (and uses less fuel).

Jump Drive Advantages

Size Reduction: This reduces the tonnage consumed by the jump drive by 10%. This can take the drive below the minimum size of 10 tons.
Sorry, even worse...

I must have been thinking about T5.10, completely unrelated to Mongoose:
T5.10, B2, p77:
No drive may be smaller than the Drive-A of the class, even after modifications like Stage Effects.

Take a standard Free Trader:

Not profitable.

Add Decreased Fuel to the Jump drive:

Even less profitable...

Change to a Budget Jump drive:

Still not profitable, but less unprofitable.

Budget drives are more profitable, unless the ship is tightly packed with large drives.
Essentially Budget drives for traders, Decreased Fuel drives for warships...

I'm good with Standard. Them fancy high tech jobs always end up needing the one fancy high tech part the locals are out of, and the budget stuff is just junk. Avoid. ;)
