[JBE] My First Cult, Your Thoughts?

Hey everyone,

I've been looking at Legend and wanted to try my hand at it. I posted my first cult on my website. Check it out and tell me what you think. Would you be interested in a book of cults that can work in any campaign setting?

Thanks in advance,

Very nice! I'd definitely be interested in a book of generic cults, but it might be nice to include some non-religious factions as well - guilds, secret societies, chivalric orders, and similar factions. Or will you keep those for a future product if the first one is successful?

Technically, this wasn't a cult. It was a Chivalric Martial Order. Totally non-religious. I just referred to it as a cult because in RQ there were only cults. But yea, I'd do guilds, cults, orders, etc all in one book. Unless I was going for a specific theme or something.

True...I must be thick today!

In RQ there were all kinds of things, certainly in Mongoose RQ, which is closely related to Legend.

This kind of thing would be useful as a generic supplement, in my opinion.

If you keep things focussed to small Hero bands (to use the HeroQuest terminology) then you can get away with small generic cults/organizations. As soon as you move to cults that are larger then you get tied up in knots over whether it would work in Glorantha/Young Kingdoms/Alternate Earth/Wherever.

Can we still use the rules for constructing factions from the RuneQuest supplement Guilds, Factions and Cults?

Unfortunately it's not Open Game Content at the moment. Hopefully Mongoose will release an updated version eventually. It's a good book.

I was also hoping that they would update the MRQII Empires book, but it's not on the schedule. Although I suppose that the success of the Legend product line increases the chance that we will see it eventually...

If they do manage to release such a book, it would profit them to combine the mechanics of both together - guilds, factions and cults for the first half and full-blown Nations and Blocs and Empires for the second, scaling up the games and metagames accordingly.

It's probably obvious, but in case someone new comes into the conversation late, yes you can still use Guilds, Factions and Cults. It's all loosely coupled to the core rules and it's compatible. What you can't do is publish parts or modifications of it because (or until) it's Open Game Content.

But the basic rules for Cults are in the Legend Core Book, so using those, you could make up your own Cults/Guilds/Clubs/Associations as you wish.

Setting Specific material is a no-no, but generic should be fine.
