[JBE] Monster of the Week

Cosmic Mongoose
So the survey is in with no real clear winner. So the two most logical places for me to start are NPCs and Monsters. Being a notable Pathfinder monster designer, I decided to move ahead with monsters first. Since it was mentioned in the other thread that a griffon was needed, I decided to kick off the monster a week with that. So be sure to check out the griffon and tell us what you think.

And be sure to pick up Legendy Factions: Common Factions 1. This book compiles the factions presented for over a month into one easy to download and reference supplement. Be sure to grab your copy today.

This week's monster for the Legend RPG, we present the first of the Book of Beasts: Monsters of the River Nations converted over to Legend.

Great post, thanks dmmcoy!

Has anyone statted up an Aboleth before? I am a Legend newbie and haven't tried my hand at monster conversion before?

I'm toying with a campaign idea, set in Greyhawk, where the mastermind/boss is an aboleth.

Nice! Are these intended as the "missing link" between wyverns and dragons? Most of their stats resemble those of Wyverns, but they have a number of features similar to their larger cousins (e.g. Breathe Flame, Detect Gold). I'm not sure about the name though...

Thank you. Truthfully, I hadn't looked at the wyvern when creating this. Had I seen them I would have named this monster something else. It was more or less suppose to be a dragon's little cousin.

Good stuff, but why dragons love gold in the first place? Is it just based on the Hobbit story?

There was an article in Dragon Magazine way back in the 80s that postulated the possibility that big Piles-O-Gold N'Stuff was how dragons attracted mates.

No, The Hobbit story is based on Germanic myth

from Wikipedia
Many European stories of dragons have them guarding a treasure hoard. Both Fafnir and Beowulf's dragon guarded earthen mounds full of ancient treasure. The treasure was cursed and brought ill to those who later possessed it.

and

The emblem books popular from late medieval times through the 17th century often represent the dragon as an emblem of greed.

(Eustace is turned into a Dragon by the dragon's gold in 'Voyage of the Dawn Treader' - but that post-dates the hobbit)

It is much, much older. For example, in the ancient Greek legend of
Jason and the Argonauts the Golden Fleece is guarded by a dragon.
Dragons are the archetypical guardians of treasures (and preferred
enemies of heroes) in many of the early Indo-European cultures' le-
gends.

You don't have to be confined to gold coinage for your dragon hoards. Other rare and interesting things can be used to attract mates (or whatever compels them to collect). Objets d'art, musical instruments, shoes, comic books, first edition Romance novels, bards kept in gilded cages, secrets, plutonium powered DeLoreans, etc.
