Is there a ninja professoin in Runequest?

There sure can be. I've made up stats for Ninja before.

Just divide 50 skill points among the basic skills and advanced.

Here's mine
Basic Skills
Acrobatics+5
Athletics+5
1H Sword+5
Throw+5
Stealth+10
Advanced Skills
Martrial Arts
Disguise

I am thinking that rather than be a profession, "Ninja" should be a legendary ability. Perhaps someone can research a good term for someone training to be a ninja to label the starting profession package. And perhaps somebody can make a good Ninja legendary ability.

I think the skills of a ninja are way too broad to be under one legendary ability. They are part sage, part spy, part warrior, part assassin.

I do agree that there should be a legendary ability associated with Ninja however. Mabey more than one.

Anyone read the rules for LO5R (legend of Five Rings) - the guys and girls in black suits are trainee Ninjas meant at best to distract from the proper ninja who apearss to be a normal person and does not get noticed before, during or after their mission.

The trainees die alot apparently............... :D

Perhaps Legendary Ability for Ninja could be:

Danger Sence: Perception 90%, Pow 15, 10 Hero Points

The ninja is so attuned with himself and his surroundings that he can "sence" danger. No one is able to "surprise" (in game terms) the ninja. And never suffers any penalties due to surprise. Also may make reactions to attacks that come from behind.

Ninja Throw: Throw 85% Dex 15, 8 Hero Points

The ninja is a master of thrown weapons. The ninja can do the following with this legandary ability.
*may throw a weapon that is not equiped without using an action to take it out.
*may throw up to three (throwing knife, dart, or star) weapons at a single target with one action.

Nice list! How about adding Perception +5 instead of Throw, and then changing the 1H Sword for a selection of a single type of weapon at +5 from a list of 1H Sword, Dagger, Shuriken, Kyotetsu-shoge (chain and sickle), Fuki-buri (blowpipie), etc?

An alternative Advanced Skill could be alchemy.

That is the most difficult part. They were reputedly skilled in many different arts. But their primary purpose historically were as spies and saboteurs, rather than killers. Of course in recent popular culture their combat skills have become almost mythical.

Agreed. That's a very good idea.

Like choose two:
Martial Arts, Disguise, Alchemy

I think you're right on this one too.

You shouldn't need a Legendary Ability to become a Ninja, after all it's just a profession/clan.

But Ninjas should have their own Legendary Abilities, as already mentioned.

Is there a Hiding Down a Toilet skill? That would be useful for a Ninja. :D

Not to mention there should be prerequisites, such as movement and a size. I don't care what the argument is, a troll will never become a ninja. They just smell to bad and are way to big to move silently.

Maybe there could be a cultural backgruond and profession: ninja,

such as

Backgruond: Ninja clan
& Job: Apprentice Ninja

I can see why Rasta proposed Legendary Ability rather than profession - ninja implies a level of mastery starting characters don't have. Keep in mind Rune Lord and Rune Priest status are also 'Legendary Abilities'. Full Ninja status is something to work towards. This Legendary Ability could be a pre-requiste for other Legendary abilities more focused on a Ninja skills (One With Shadows, Silent Strike, etc.)

Starting as a 'Ninja' seems akin to saying "I'm a Level 1 Jedi" - it just doesn't seem right.

A background for Martial Artist or Ninja in Training (is there a name for a Ninja in training/student?) could be appropriate though.

I think you are right. And though a "level 1 jedi" would probably be a padawan. I am not aware of such a term associated with ninja. I do know of the term SOKE (sow-kay) which entitles a degree of mastery. But I'm sure a term does exsist.

According to some sources, the following clan ranks are mentioned...

Genin - an operative
Chunin - a group/cell leader
Jonin - the school or clan head

However I don't recall ever reading these titles in any of the historical texts on Ninja I've read. Thus they may be modern inventions... But still suitable for fantasy Ninja anyway!

Agreed. I just got a funny picture of a clumsy troll, busting out of his ninja suit, trying to move quietly on a rooftop.

That works for me. And they even SOUND japanese. 8)

One of my upcoming projects is 'RQ Samurai' (working title, probably).

I think I can safely say that ninja will feature.
