its a losing battle trying to rationalizing hobby with wife unless she plays maybe. I tried pointing out to my wife I dont smoke, drink, gamble or go to expensive sporting events. I mean try comparing the cost of your game stuff to some decent golf clubs or fishing gear. Or season tickets to some sporting event, at least here in the US.
Good news for me as I got both my daughters interested now in gaming so I now at least have some allies in the family.

Still, it's a moot point as I've just bought Hawkmoon without telling her (what a rebel). Now I've got to find a way of reading it without getting the Third Degree.
I think there might be a niche market here, selling fake dust jackets of the right size. They could be for things like "Great Golf Courses of Ireland" or "World's Most Interesting Radio Masts, Vol. II", that wives for some reason don't object to in the same way as RPG books, but aren't interested in reading themselves. Slip them over your new RPG books and there you have it - instant camouflage.

It'd be like buying a newspaper to cover up the porn mag with. Not of course, that anyone here has ever done that...

Newspaper? You mean people still waste good money paying for news? Especially OUTDATED news.

That'S almost as stupid as throwing away money on greeting cards ("When you don't even care enough to use your own words.")!

 That's so idiotic I can't even begin to respond to it within the parameters of this messageboard.

And yet, you tried.

Seriously, newspapers in the modern era are a waste of tree pulp. There are faster and better methods of moving information. The modern newspaper is little more than propaganda and advertising. It was different back when there were lots of papers in the major cities, competition existed, and newspapers were part of a the social consciousness of society. Back before "news" got turned into entertainment.

Says the guy who responds to an internet comment a week later.

I lost track of the thread.
This isn't the only thing I do on the net, nor the only forum I visit. Nor is it my profession to do so. Neither point makes any difference as to the value to printed newspapers in the information age.

Information on the net is:

*Unaccountable
*Anonymous
*Doubtful
*Eccentric
*A few pearls surrounded by utter garbage

Ask yourself this question. If a close relation was looking to eat the fruit of an unknown plant would you google it and then decide he/she could eat it or use more traditional information sources?

THe same holds true for the press, especially the old Hearst newpaper chain. The saving grace of the net over a newspaper is that people can acess multiple sites and sources for information. Most towns and cities only produce a single newspaper.

If a close relation was going to eat an unknown plant, I would try to stop them. If I wanted to identify the plant I certainly would NOT use a newspaper to do so, but rather a combination of internet searches AND textbooks.

Ah, Dick Turpin is alive and well and living in the Mongoose Forum. "I'll have that shiny necklace from 'round thy pretty neck, my lovely!" :D

Seriously, guys, this is Superhighway robbery! How about starting a new thread on the pros & cons of print -v- electronic news media?

Sorry, wasn't supposed to be a threadjack, but an offhand comment justifying spending money on RPGs in comparison with other things people spend money on.

Basically it's the "what I waste our money on is more important than what you waste our money on." thing.

Simon Phipp (aka Soltakss) manages to buy just about about every new release, read them all, and write pretty sizable reviews (very informative too - thanks Simon! - except now I have to buy Pirates).

I don't suppose you could supply a link to the Pirates review, could you? Pretty please?

I'm afraid that I'm having no luck whatsoever finding it on Simon's site. :(
