In Harm's Way, the movie

Man, I watched it again tonight. I absolutely LOVE that movie, when I was but a wee little kid its one of the things that got me into doing wargaming though it took forever to finally get around to naval wargaming, lol.

I've got to watch it again though and see if I can put together the two fleets for the last battle in the movie. They read off the Jap fleet straight out so that will be no problem, but the American fleet is a couple of Baltimore heavy cruisers and some Fletcher destroyers. Still have to find out the count and what else may have been there.

If you've never seen the movie, its just too cool. And a real serious production with full cooperation from the USN during the filming. Outstanding and not the type of film made anymore.

See the Saturday Session 4 The Battle of Levuvana............

The closest historical battle to the final one in the movie is called "The Battle off Samar" during the Leyte Gulf invasion of the Philippines in 1944. The movie replaced the American escort carriers with cruisers but the Yamato was there as in the movie. It's a bit one-sided to play as a game even though in reality the battle came out in favor of the U.S. side. Tonnage-wise the USN was outnumbered 10-1 against.

The movie battle seems to have merged another battle into the action off of Samar. That is one of the series during the struggle over Guadalcanal called First Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, November 13 1942. In this action, a scratch force of USN cruisers and destroyers went up against a force similar to what is stated in the movie, with the Yamato bumping the Hiei's BB slot.

As an option you could replace the Hiei with the Yamato but the results would probably be bad for the USN, heh.

Yeah, I recognized the simularity to the Guadalcanal battles right away which is why I thought this would be fun to do. Especially since it is the Duke's 100th birthday this month. Besides, there were no aircraft in that fight at all, heh.

I figured on some special rules. Some japanese ships starting the battle with a couple of criticals already from the mines, a "Hero" factor for having the Duke as the fleet admiral, etc... I realize that there is pretty much no way those Baltimore cruisers are going to hurt the Yamato, but it would still be fun.

Of course, you would have to find and play the background theme that is in the movie. It's required, you know.

The Americans almost pulled it off. The minefields helped a lot.

BTW they didnot use VaS, they used a different game system which is ok but I like VaS better.

Also it shames me to say that I lost all the pics I took to a hard drive crash the day that I loaded them up and wiped them from my camera.

Ah well, next time:)

FGDN is an interesting set. Quite coarse in soem aspects, infinite detail (e.g. number of intact hydrogen bags in a zeppelin) in others :)
