Identifing Items

Hey all,
How does someone who just found a trinket or potion determine its properties? I have not seen any identify type magics and there is not really a universal magic skill. How about recognising a rune? Is it common enough that you could just use lore (world) or does it take an appraise check or something else? I hate to have my players need to take a new skill just to figure out what things do as they complain about how they are required to put the bulk of their starting points into "survival" skills as it is.

I could just force them to visit sages for everything but then I would need to drastically increase the amount of cash/loot they find to make up for it and I find it hard to justify why every broo they run across happens to have more than a couple of silvers.

The Sorcery spell Mystic Vision goes int reading enchantments pretty in depth. The Divine equivalent Soul Sight implies you can learn about the properties of an item. The Rune Magic spell second sight talks only about detecting the POW of an item.

I would say some of all of these spells are how magic items are identified. In the past when magic items all had either bound spirits or spell matrices it made sense that second sight would get you the information you needed. Now with the new enchantments it does not make as much sense.

If you are looking at not burdening your players with having to learn new skills/spells use the above mentioned spells to identify items.

You could also allow use of the enchantment skill to precisely determine an objects abilities.

Hi,

How odd, I just posted an appraisal magic up on the wiki, as a test of the system. It allows you to identify a magical property or historical fact on a critical roll.

ok sounds good. Until they have the advancments/runes to get those I will have them seek sages. I hadn't thought about enchanting being usable. Not sure if any of them are planning on picking it up but then we have only had 3 game sessions so far.
