Making Riches and Profit From Roleplaying Games!

I am Mongoose, and so can you! is an in-depth look at how anyone can make a full-time living from the roleplaying games industry. Whether you are looking to find a career creating and selling roleplaying games, or are determined to start your own business, this book shows you how.

You will be taken through facts and figures showing, chapter and verse, how to go about gathering the resources needed to create your own roleplaying games, what to do once you have a book ready to sell, and how much money you are likely to make over the course of your first year in business.

This book covers several different scenarios, allowing you to pick the one most suited to you, and your current situation. Even in today's credit crunch climate, you will be shown how you can make a very viable living from roleplaying games alone.

Written by Matthew Sprange, owner of one of the most successful roleplaying companies around (Mongoose Publishing), I am Mongoose, and so can you! will show you all the secrets you need to begin.

Think of this book as the equivalent of spending an hour or two with the boss of a successful roleplaying publisher, asking them just how you can make a successful living doing the same thing!

Seriously, $30 for 37 pages?!

Even at the old $2 to £1, which we're nowhere near now, that's still awfully expensive for a printed book of that size, never mind a pdf.

Please tell me either the cost or the page count is out by an order of magnitude.....

As I said on EN World;

A fair comment that deserves a reply.

To give just one example, in this book I show you how, with a small initial investment, how to make $40,000-odd in a year. No quick assumptions, I show you how to do it with specific titles, I show you what to spend, where to spend it, and how much revenue you can expect to see, month by month. I show you what you need to do, how to do it, and how to recruit your first members of staff. I show you the benefits of those staff members, and the difference they make to your bottom line if you do or do not take them on (that $40k increases a great deal if you do. . .).

I also show how to take a more relaxed approach and make less profit, and how to work your bottom off and make (much) more.

Given all that, how much would you say the PDF is worth?

I havent got it yet but I suppose you have to consider is it worth the money for you.

My impressions of it is thats its sort of paying for buisness advice and so like a consultant's fee IMO.

A $30 PDF at 37 pages? I'd say it should be worth no more than $10-$15.

After all, bookshop shelves are full of full-size printed books (sometimes with hundreds of pages) about how to start businesses, that cost $15-$20. Charging twice that for a PDF with a fraction of the pages seems more than a little excessive to me.

I was about to put this thread in the SPAM reporting thread, then I saw it was made by Matt! LOL!!

Make money out of the RPG sector?

Send me $30 and I'll tell you how to make money from the RPG community!

Sam

I have read the pdf preview and have really enjoyed the read.

It really seems to be a "no nonsense" consulting session about starting a RPG based business.

BTW: Are the Salaries mentioned before or after tax?

One more thing:
The pdf also gives us a unique view into Matt's life and view on life: 8)
Quote from the free pdf preview: "Before I started Mongoose, I was living with my parents and driving around the country to fix computers and printers for a living for a salary that, quite frankly, I now find somewhat embarrassing. Eight years later, Mongoose is still trading (a feat in itself), I have my own home (whose value would raise the eyebrows of anyone in the US), and drive a Jaguar."

Matt also answered the question: “Who Are You?” by putting you into salary groups.
(NOTE: It makes a lot of sense in the context of the text!)

This reminds me of one my gaming buddies. He worked his butt off in the IT business for around 1 dozen years, made some Millions (yes, really) out of it and quit working at age 30+.
When he was asked “What are you doing?” (meaning “Who are you and where are you standing in life?) he always answered: “Nothing! I do nothing.” This ALWAYS raised eyebrows. It really showed me how much we are defining people on what they are doing to earn a living.
BTW: As soon as my buddy explained the story behind the “I do nothing!” everybody was calm and suitable adoringly…

So all in all I can only advice that you should read the preview and then decide if the book is worth the money for you!

And no, I am not going to tell how big my salary is or if I own a house or not…
 But I am not driving a Jaguar...

Well, that is very much a male thing - a man usually is defined (and, indeed, defines himself) by his job. You _are_ your job, in many instances.

Fair points Matthew, I guess it's a little pricey for me who is only mildly interested in writng an RPG (Someone has to ressurect A:2089  ) so it's kind of pricier than I'd spend for a 'just to have' book.

I figure at half the price you'd sell more than twice as many though to compensate.

Well, given how easy it is to drop $30.00 on lead, or better still, a 128pp fatty RPG product that either SuXXorS or is a great read but just sits on the shelf, or is just plain even more of a luxury than usual RPG buys, it's certainly worth a shot, regardless of being thin. Still, I suppose you could pump up the page count with lots of Big Guns and Hooters Gaming art, plus a map of your Jag's Fuel and lube system. Maybe some Excel spreadsheets and powerpoint slides ?

Still, Matt, just to let you know, I'm putting off either the purchase of a travel edition pdf of HG (I already have the deadtree), or a convenience pocket edition of Traveller Core to get this one. And, if you want to retain my respect, I fully expect you to blow your share of the money on silk pillows and drugged custard, okay ?

Exactly.

As (IIRC) Peter Jones once said on a TV interview - "one of the bets ways to get rich quick is to write a book telling people they can get rich quick". :)
