How big is Dara Happa?

I'm currently running Dara Happa Stirs (it's going very well!) but I'm a little confused by the geography. On p.105 it says that sailing down the Oslir from Yuthuppa to Mernita takes seven days, followed by two days travel inland. But on the map on p.7, it's barely 100km by river, and only about 10km inland. At that rate the river journey should be 2-3 days, and the journey inland no more than an afternoon. So is Dara Happa a big place or a small place? My PCs have been looking at that map to plan things -- they're going to be surprised if they suddenly discover the world is three times the size they thought it was! :)

The easy answer is to say: Its a mythical landscape...

The true answer is: I screwed up!

The real answer is: You make it however long you want the journey to be. Remember that Oslir is a goddess and not a natural river. The landscape around Mernita is blasted by the light of Antirius and it ain't easy to traverse. Your Dara Happa Should (and Will) Vary!

Hee! Reminds me of the first edition of Warhammer FRP, which said that the Warhammer World was "two or three times the size of Earth", but never specified which. :)

Hi,

There have been issues with the size and scale of Glorantha for a long time. I don't think that when Greg started the project that he planned for his world to be so full and detailed, as a result scales often seem wrong to the modern reader. Several folk have suggested that Glorantha should have its size at least doubled.

However as Loz says the Oslir is a magical river, if you want to slow the players progress down let them meet a few Varnaga the Crocodile bandits!

Count me among those who prefer the Big Glorantha . I tend to take the official scales and triple them. Otherwise the mighty EWF and later Lunar Empire is about the size of England.

Hey, I'll have you know, England is HUGE! Well, it's difficult to get anywhere very fast, anyway. The EWF is actually quite small -- its the winding roads and poor public transport that make it seem big.

I would say they are bigger than that.

Nice map - and perfectly in line with what Greg (and I) view Glorantha. Sartar is about the size of one of the old kingdoms of the Heptarchy (actually a little larger). The Lunar empire should be compared with the Assyrian or Neo-Babylonian empires, not Rome. The Oslir is about 1500 miles long (it is much windier and twisty than the maps would suggest), making it comparable to the Tigris or Euphrates in length (although its volume and discharge is much greater than the Tigris AND Euphrates rivers). And so on.

As Greg wrote recently, Glorantha is exactly the right size!

And Dragon's Eye is roughly in the spot Stevenage would be...

I always knew there was something weird about this place...!

At least someone finally found something useful to do with London - Build mountains on it
