How bad is lack of auto trait anyway?

Just something I was musing over(lack of SST games around here is plain annoying!) while planning my future LAMI force(now that I have cap platoon, marauder platoon and rest of exo platoon ordered it's time to start worrying about LAMI). Auto trait gives you 6" lethal zone. So far so good. But how much of limitation the 3" lethal zone really is?

Well atleast against other MI actually not that much! Other is pretty much forced to provide clumbing up anyway or...you will simply snipe out squad leaders...Whoops!

So if other spreads(hah! You won't kill that many with your puny 3" lethal zone weapons!) simply designate sergeant and corporal as targets. If he has spread out too much to use 6" command radius that's dead sergeant and corporal. Squad out of command.

Suddenly those blasters also got new value...Danger of this forces to bunch up...Plasma bug has nice big template...Mmmmm...Bad if you bunch up, bad if you don't

Okay now you can all laugh at me. Yes it took this long to realise this...

Well, 3" can be very limiting.
Just ask people fighting Mr. Evils Wasp Swarm.

But auto can also be very dangerous - imagine a Warrior Bug right between your own models. Firing at it can prove very deadly.

Against other MI or Skinnies, you're right that it doesn't make a huge difference because, if anything, the 3" fire zone will make the squad leaders take more hits.

However, against bugs, it really does hurt. It's surprising, but with how big Warrior bugs are, sometimes you can't get more than 3-4 models in a single fire zone. With smaller units of 3-5 models like Firefries and hoppers often are, sometimes you're lucky to get 2 models in a 3" firezone.

Also, just simple math will show you the difference...

3" FZ - n*3^2 = 28.275"^2

6" FZ - n*6^2 = 113.1"^2 (or 4 times as much as the 3" zone)

So, if the enemy is packed together at all, and you have a lot of shots coming from one unit (like LAMI), a 6" firezone would really help.

At least with LAMI you can invest in a corporal to let you split firezones. but that said while you're not spreading your fire out over a large area, a big squad is more likely to kill what they fire at due to rolling more D6s on less targets.

but the 6" caps will take out more targets, so it's better in the long run.
Having said that. Lack of auto is a massive advantage when firing at models that are screened by cheap models. A 3" fire zone doesn't extend past a plasma bugs body, so he can end up taking the lot.
Maybe better trained models should get to choose? Wild fire over 6" or close packed concentrated fire.

in which grade are You?

Ummm... College Graduate...

Why is there something wrong with my math? The last time I checked, the area of a Circle was nr^2.

Well, that criticism would have been so much more effective if you'd said:

Laugh out loud... I remember doing the area of a circle when I was in 8th grade.

:)
Nothing wrong with your maths, it's just the weird way the notation appears in text format.

1)what's n?
2)
^-this thing means power(i'm not sure if it's called that way)
but
28.275^2=799,475625
113.1^2=12791,61

it's 16 time that much (4^2)

I'm guessing n wud be pi as there isnt any other symbol on the keyboard remotly like it.

what he ment when he put down was:
28.275^2 = 28.275 inches squared
113.1^2 = 113.1 inches squared

alltho really i think it should be inches circled haha
