Home brew sorcery

Do you guys stick to the spells outlined in the books or invent your own?

Busting out spells seen in the Conan stories is great fun, but they are pretty limited in scope. It makes sense that Thoth Amon or any of the other big name sorcerers would know many more secrets than they made use of while in the spotlight, don't you think?

One of my players is multiclassing from soldier into scholar and I would like to be able to give him more options within the styles, where there are very few spells to choose from at a given level.

Also, could it be possible for scholars to create/modify spells making them unique to that scholar?

your the gm, anythings possible if you want it to be. just use some common sense and try to figure out all the abusive ways the spell could be used to see whether its too powerful or not powerful enough.

i use made up spells and even allow my players to create something on the fly thats based of a spell they already know, i just have them make a perform(ritual) check before the magic attack roll (a roll of 1 resulting in runaway magic automatically). and usually quite a long cast time.

I've used spells from Call of Cthulhu. Not all of them fit to the spirit of Conan, but many are usable with little tweaking. After all, the Mythos is present in Hyboria as well. Hehe, at least in my Hyboria.

Thats an idea I hadn't considered, that kind of flexibility would be pretty handy for wayward slayers. (which is why they wont be getting it  )

I'm thinking ill allow the players to create a spell effect (out of game), have it statted out before the game and then require them to learn it in game the usual way, demons/masters/scrolls etc. Man, the party barbarians going to hate that. :D

Ill see how it goes for a while and post the first few if anyones interested to see what gets conjured.

I used a DB for the first time ever in my game this last weekend, an NPC scholar/soldier was being attacked by 6 mounted knights when he pulled it out.
I thought a fireball effect was a bit silly for someone who knew no fire related magic in any way so I calculated the standard damage, halved it +10 as for massive damage and then set that number as the DC for an area-effect Gelid Bones spell - dropping all the horses and 5 of the riders, the remaining one failing his ride check and eating dirt in a large way.

T'was good.
