OK looking at the GW and Coat D'Armes ranges

What colours should I be using for the Base Colours of my Tommies and German Wehrmacht infantry?

I've tried Tamiya Field Grey for the Germans but it doesn't look right

You don't even want to touch these. You really cannot do better for WW2 than Vallejo piants. Here's a link to buy in the UK.

It's also worth noting that you can pick up complete sets (designed for FOW but good for any scale) tailor made for a specific army. They also squeeze out of the pot rather than you having to dip in, so to speak, which means less wastage and mess.

i have 3 vallejo sets, the FOW German, FOW British and FOW American, and they really are top notch, hobbycraft sell them if theres one near you.

Well I'm off to Campaign at Milton Keynes on Saturday so I'll see if anyone has them there.
My local group is putting on an ACW game so I'm stuck there all day...

I'll also chime in and say go Vallejo. Coverage and color pallette is superb. However, if all you have is GW paints, then here's what I'd do:

British

Uniform-Graveyard Earth
Rifle, entrenching tool-Scorched Brown
Metal-Boltgun Metal
Helmet-Catachan Green
Wegging and equipment pouches-Khommando Khaki
Flesh-Tallarn Flesh
Boots-Chaos Black

German (tougher IMO)
Uniform-Catachan Green
Belt, suspenders, boots-Chaos Black
Canteen, tool handle-Scorched Brown
Tent Half-Bestial Brown
SMG mag pouches-Khommando Khaki
Guns and metal-see above
Helmet, gas mask cannister-the darkest gray they make, whatever it is
Three color camo-Desert Yellow, Snot Green, Bestial Brown
