Help with Gangs table

Anyone have any good ideas for a mega-city table layout that have been playtested?

I am beginning a build with two blocks on either side (or corner) of the table. The blocks would have lots of balconies, be connected by multi-level pedways, megways, tubeways...have storefronts along the bottom of each block and a tween block plaza between them.

The plan is for use with 2 sides, or 1 side vs judges.

Any thoughts before I commit to the layout? how much terrain works well in gangs. Should I have more open space (if so how many inches apart) or crowd it in?

ideas?

Of course the blocks would only be a portion of the front of a block....I realize that putting an entire block building on a tale would be impossible due to scale.

I started by building a few nondescript foam rectangles, and detailing them with pathways and graffitti, from there I made TONS of smaller stuff to block line of sight and to constitute as difficult to move thru terrain. When all of that was done I made two small buildings. I like to think of them as support pillars rather than city blocks. My point being; If you make enuf stuff you can stack it and then it's on! Pedways, overzooms ect. Lots of falling, lots of death! If I stack the buildings on top of my foam blocks the highest point is around 2 and a half ft. off the table. Still, I want more...

rather sadly, my building of scenery has overtaken me and I've not finished my gang yet.... or painted much of the scenery either

I have a tower that's 20 inches tall which connects with walkways to my corner block.... that is still in progress, but should be somewhere around 30-40 inches tall.... again with other walkways and balconies.... I've gone with big heavy looking foundations to my 'big' buildings as the ground level is city bottom and you wouldn't really want a shop there... I've some Plasticville buildings (bank and hospital) for 'older' architecture between the blocks (the hotdog/frosty stand is a winner as well).... I've also some nice 'tech' pieces.... am planing on doing some photos once the block is further along

I was considering making a square "hole" in the middle of the table (surrounded by open courtyard platforms), then putting a page under it that has a printed screenshot or image of a top-down view of the mega-city...so it looks like the tween-block plaza is crossing the two towers half-way up the building!

So one thing that bothers me from the manual is the scenario setups suggest a min 24 x 24 inch table, but then go on to show rectangular drawings of the setup, some of which have 10 inches on each side for setting up figures...that leaves 4 inches in the center...very small arena. Is that typical for a good battle?

The block wars scenario suggests a 24 x 48 inch table for multiplayer, which is what I was considering. Would that be way too big for 2-player combat?

My group (and in fact when I run demos...) play Gangs on a 4x4 table. It takes a couple turns until the fight starts in ernest but it seems to work fine.

I actually considered a similar thing, but then you are losing X amount of gaming space.... obviously that's a consideration with buildings as well, but as they are 3D, they help block line of sight and can add additional levels/heights to fight from... I dropped it after I worked on the plans for a while and went with the rather mammoth and silly task of making the drop 'real'...

my block should make some progress in the next week or so, so I'll offer up what I have then....

although - as we're on the topic of blocks.....

I really have no idea what colour to paint them.... grey seems so usual.... I'm toying with off white like a recent article I saw on doing wraithbones (GW boo hiss yeah I know)... dunno though....

you could go for a metalic pale blue or a pale red. That's what I was considering...so it looks like metal painted but faded.

Just go with bright colours.
Red, green, orange, turqouise, blue whatever.
Just make it loud. Have grey and brown accents every so often, and make them look dirty. :) [/i]
