Has Kepler Discovered A Dyson Sphere?

It would be more realistic to think that they'd be raiding other systems for raw materials, at least until they are forced to dismantle their own planet(s).
One of the factions in the AT-43 game was the Therians. In the game they created a Dyson Sphere and the fluff talks about how many systems they destroyed to get the needed materials to do so. Was quite an interesting thing to think about. 8)

"But it could be incomplete. Say a Dyson sphere still under construction."

Or it's a type of ringworld in sections with tremendous connections between. If you also include Niven's ringworld construction, there could be the inner ring of material that simulates day/ night cycles giving our perception a winking of light.

If we discover Jump drives or, better for our real universe structure, the alterative Warp drive, it will take at optimum 1500 J-1s as well as time refueling or 3000 weeks to reach there. That's about 58 years! Or we wait for a couple thousand years for TL 13 and J4 so it takes 14 years.... Un huh.

It would only actually take about 500 J-1s to get there, since a jump is up to three parsecs at a time. But yah, it would be a very long trip since they'd have to refuel, dodge crazy Vargr and Aslan, weird warlike herbivores, etc. And maybe even a side-trip to meet Grandfather!

You make an interesting point about the ringworld idea. Maybe they built in sections and leave parts of it open. It would work and still function properly. You'd just have to have end-caps on the sections you want an atmosphere on.

According to the original news article - "Kepler also plans to observe KIC 8462852 in May 2017, when the mass is expected to transit the star again." So it's going to be a little while till hey take a gander at it visually again. Assuming the radio detection guys don't find anything with their initial scan or a followup with the VLA.

Oh you are so right! I was seeing the 1500 units as hexes in my mind and forgot to divide by three. Still means 19 years one way.

Far too early to tell. But it couldn't be a Dyson sphere, as we would not be able to see the sun.

But it could be incomplete. Say a Dyson sphere still under construction.

Or it could just be a Dyson Shell, a mass of orbiting stations instead of a unitary sphere.

Wasn't there also a Dyson Swarm if I remember right?

Could have been a former system wide civilization that mutually agreed to destruct their habitats over the precise definition of what "is" is.

I have some new ideas on a ringworld that I posted here:
http://forum.mongoosepublishing.com/viewtopic.php?f=89&t=115111
This time the shadow squares are at the distance of Venus' orbit from the Sun. The ringworld itself rotates once every 9 days, I created a Ringworld calendar based on a 9 day week, there are 365 individual shadow squares that aren't quite square vary in size and shape to simulate seasons to north and south hemisphere simultaneously! All 365 days of the year are represented somewhere on the ringworld's surface all at once. The shadow square ring rotates at a slightly slower rate than the ringworld itself so with each rotation the ringworld slides past 9 shadow squares representing 9 days. There are no leap years in this calendar, as there are a constant 365 days per year, there is no way to add a 366 shadow square every 4 years and then take it away, so all years are exactly 365 days long and each shadow square represents a specific date of the year, for example 1 shadow square is shaped for June 4, another Shadow Square represent September 13th, There is a New Year's Day Shadow Square and that shadow square is always for New Year's day, it never changes its shape.

His uncle mused about the fact that every boy wanted take over the place of his father, and the significance of smoking a cigar.

His uncle was a monkey in the woods, eh?

I bet he was probably French too.

I was going through the Internet archives and came across an old Craigslist ad for French carbines (age was indeterminate, but hey, French). "For sale - Lightly used rifle. Only dropped once"

New theory so no aliens.
