"Hamster Cage"

Never heard "hamster cage" used as anything other than for a pet. OTU had the term "Rotating Habitats" since at least 1985 when the Journal of the Travellers' Aid Society Issue No. 23 (which went for $2.50 USD back then) used it in its article "Space Habitats in Traveller" by Chris Struble.

"Hamster Cage" sounds like some rarely used (except maybe in the US?) term that should just disappear now.

Funny, I figured it was a term used in the UK. Not here. Hamster Wheel would work though.

But I still like the term offered back at the top of the thread; "Rotating Wheel". It fits both the design and gives a clear image of the function. Sort of like the "Rotating Wheel" in 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Rotating wheel is okay unless you are referring to something like the O’Neill Cylinder which is why I like "Rotating Habitats" as it kind of covers all bases for artificial gravity produced by rotation.

Great point. I guess I was using the "wheel" image in my mind as we were talking. I forgot to include the cylinder option as well. You have sold me. I would like to change my vote to "Rotating Habitats". :D

Yet hamster cage has a far greater appeal and imagery.

Leaves me dead inside...

But then to some TL15 civvie taking a tour of the 1st Imperium museum in Regina located in a recreated O'Neil cylinder at the L4 point, they wouldn't even know what it was called.

For all the discussions about the wording, nobody said anything about the science part. :(

So if you use spin to generate gravity, how do people react when you turn the engines on? People seem to forget that part.

I covered reaction drives and artificial gravity generation quite comprehensively in the Anderson and Felix Guide to Naval Architecture for Gypsy Knights Games Clement Sector setting. Still fits perfectly for HG 2e as well.

No, hamster is not mentioned at all. :)

Oh, I picked that up a while ago but have not had much time to read it. I'll have to do that soonest! :)
