Goodbye Mongoose!

BlackCat

Mongoose
Well, this forum is going to close next week, so I guess it is time for some of us to say goodbye to Mongoose Publishing. Not that I'm mad about what is happening with the LW line: I'm disappointed, but I have the feeling that it is not Mongoose's decision to end the production of the LW brand. There's no hard feelings.

I did join this forum a few years ago, so that I could get news on the republication of the LW gamebook series. I'm not a RPG player, and with the end of the LW line here at Mongoose, I have no interest in visiting these boards anymore.

As a farewell comment, I would like to thank the people of Mongoose (there are surely a lot of them that we don't know their names that are working in the backstage of the production line). I would like to thank all the artists that did work for the LW gamebooks: Pascal Quidault, Alberto Dal Lago, Richard Longmore and Nate Furman.Thank you to the various authors that provided us with the novels and bonus adventures. Of course, Joe mentions over at the PA website that he now holds the rights of the series and is in talks with other publishers, so I hope that if a new publisher picks up the LW line, we will see more work from the artists and authors that I've just mentionned.

However, I don't think we will ever see Matthew Sprange linked to the LW brand again, so thanks to him and Mongoose for bringing the LW series back to life. Without them, I don't think that the French, German and Italian publishers would had picked up the rights for the LW gamebooks in these languages which helped creating a new fanbase around the world. I think the LW series is more popular now than it was back at the end of the 90s. I think the future is bright for the LW series, thanks to Matt.

I'll still be visiting the PA boards, so come and have a chat with us there. For those that won't come over, it was a pleasure meeting you.

This is disappointing news. Its not the end of the world. I've seen Mongoose go through it before with Babylon 5, ACTA, Starship Troopers, Runequest and with other games that I don't play.

Mongoose did produce a heck of a lot for LW - two RPGs, miniatures, novels, reprints of 17 books, mini adventures, a bigger better FFtD...

Also I got to play LW with Joe Dever thanks to Mongoose.

So thanks to Mongoose for bringing Lone Wolf back.

This is the line that got me interested in Mongoose as a gaming publisher from which to buy products from.

Ive enjoyed and looked forward to every Lone Wolf paperback.

Thanks for the hard work.

Seconding what Black Cat and everyone else has said.

And until recently I did not appreciate that this forum went back to the days just before the first d20 RPG was released, so sad to see that much history go!

I have hinted at this in some of my last posts, but just to echo the comments on here really. There has been some bad, but there has also been some good and at the end of it all we have 17 hardback LW books to read, plus the impetus for new maps, multiplayer books and novels to name a few.

And for me personally, an LW community which I didn't really know existed before. Tower of the Sun went down so we all came here - now we need to reassemble at Project Aon and see what happens in the future.

So thank you Mongoose, shame how it ended but thanks for taking us here, and thanks to Matt - we tend to hold you responsible as you reply to us here, but of course, that isn't fair. So thank you for talking to us.

whilst i can't be quite as nice as blackcat - i'm very disappointed books 29-32 remain as elusive as ever - he makes a very eloquent post. i guess it's easier to see and be the negative than the positives in things like this. always enjoyed the forum here, and people's stories of LW and what it meant to them.

for me i actually started with the masters of darkness, bought in my local bookshop when i was 9 or 10 i think. form there it was backward buying for books 11 -> 1! to finally run through the full kai and magnakai sagas was epic ... from being a scared kai trainee evading the darklords, to finally ending their existence and founding the new order ... then of course books 13+ started, and it was even more epic (epic plus?)
In the meantime i'd got involved with both warhammer / w40k and more complex rpgs ... a progressing journey that would take me into live action roleplay at uni, and continues to this day. mostly founded by lone wolf, helped a little by its red-headed step-child (in my eyes) fighting fantasy.

so yeah, any lone wolf is better than no lone wolf. i guess i'll kinda take that. see you around guys.

for summerlund and the kai! :)

Clearly, the word you were looking for is 'epicer'. :)

Please come join us all at Project Aon. As you noted, this isn't the end of the line for Lone Wolf and I think you will be pleasantly surprised at just how much is left in store. The Kai aren't going anywhere. This is only a new beginning.

Talk with you soon and thanks for coming along on the ride so far!

Indeed, thank you mongoose publishing for the 17 books and for bringing lone wolf back! I'm optimistic that Joe Dever will find a way to get books 18 and onwards out if possible!!

I blame e-books for all this!!

Although I was a late to the scene (my post count says it all), I too echo the sentiments above. I never felt I could justify the mega deal but I think I bought up all the RPG books. There was a lot of potential with the use of Joe's rich world and it's a shame it didn't entirely come to fruition.

Whilst I've only had one brief attempt at playing the RPG with some mates and found things a bit confusing I still wanted to convey my appreciation for the work Matt and Mongoose put into things. Clearly things didn't go to plan but I think that good things still came from it.

No doubt I'll slink off to another LW forum, just need to work out which one to join.

All the best

Project Aon, that's where a lot of the Tower of the Sun folks are. I am now over there and August is there of course.

Yup, ta. I figured that would be the case. I really couldn't think of any forums with LW content other than here, TotS and PA. I used to be on the Kai Wisdom mailing list but that was literally over a decade ago and the only other site I could think of was Jon Blakes Oasis site.

Project Aon is now where all official announcements from Joe will be posted. I have no doubt news will travel to the Tower of the Sun as well. If you are looking to rejoin forums, those are definitely your best bets!

Look forward to seeing you there,
-A

Some of you have uncompleted Megadeal subscriptions.

Very incomplete. Some of us signed up early enough to pay for the full series and only just just checked the website tonight to see if there was any news on what was taking the next book so long yet.

In addition, Mongoose Publishing is making an open offer to all such Megadeal subscribers to provide credit for other Mongoose Publishing products up to the full value of your subscription, which we will send to you post free, wherever you are in the world. There is no requirement for this to be taken immediately, and we will hold accounts open for as long as you wish. Please note that this does not include Megadeals whose subscriptions have been completely fulfilled.

Since Mongoose have, over the last 8 or 9 months, managed to get rid of everything they were selling that I might be interested in that's not much consolation to me :(.

Mongoose did produce a heck of a lot for LW - two RPGs, miniatures, novels, reprints of 17 books, mini adventures, a bigger better FFtD...

So they did, and what they did was great. So I'm going to try to remember those good times and not let this late night shock harm my opinions of them in the future.

helped a little by its red-headed step-child (in my eyes) fighting fantasy.

LOL :D So so true!!!

Well, I think I`ll go with BC. It`s not the right place for harsh words and in the end, I`m glad and thankfull for the rerelease of the series.

So goodbye Mongoose, goodbye Matt and goodbye community. See you at Project Aon.
