Ghost's VaS

Alright folks, time to start what will hopefully be a semi-regular plog/random VaS comment thread. Please feel free to comment on any inaccuracies to correct and/or improvements that can be made.

My previous gaming experience means I focus on the wargaming aspect over the historical recreation aspect of the game, and as such the ships I have chosen are not tied down to any one period or campaign.

We'll start off with my current fleet - the IJN. Due to budget constraints among my friends and I, we chose Figurehead's 1:6000 range of ships, and have been pleased overall with the models.

My destroyer flotilla. The fighting core of my fleet; armed with Long Lances, they handily take care of anything from opposing DDs to capital ships. Their major weakness appears to be torpedo bombers, which can ignore the very high Target scores they acheive at full speed. 6 Akitsukis, 8 Shiratsuyus, 8 Kageros.

My Cruisers. The Agano CLs act as destroyer leaders, since they are effectively 9 Damage DDs with 3 twin 6" turrets to boot. The profusion of 8" armed Japanese CAs means they can fight on even terms with anything but a capital ship or pocket battleship at range, and have heavy Long Lance armament for closer engagement. 2 Aoba, 2 Furutaka, 4 Takao, and 3 Myoko. The Ashigara awaits painting.

My capital ships. The Fusos and Ises are dated, but still effective with their 6 twin 14" broadsides. The Shokakus are excellent fleet carriers, or rather they would be if I had any aircraft! The Yamashiro had to be repainted due to the varnish getting messed up (I think the gloss varnish hadn't dried completely when I applied the spray matte varnish), and so it has no nameplate until I get my printer fixed/replaced. The Yamato and Mushashi (both as of 1941) are the remaining vessels not painted in my IJN.

Now for some close-ups.

The DDs are based on 20 x 30mm plasticard. CCs are on 20 x 40mm, capital are on 20 x 50mm.

Now on to the Q&A.

My research indicates that the following would be approximately equivelant (differences would mostly lie in crew scores): Hatsuharu/Shiratsuyu, Matsu/Tachibana, Fubuki/Akatsuki, and Kagero/Asashio/Yugumo. Would these be close enough to count all classes as the ones that are described in VaS and OOB? Also Minikaze/Kamikaze, though they have no ingame stats.

Does anyone have a good source for Japanese naval tactical doctirine in WWII?

Sorry, I don't have the answers to your questions.

I just wanted to comment on how great your fleet is looking.

I like the idea of mounting the 1/6000. I also have a large collection of 1/6000, but most is not painted as I also have a large 1/1800 WoTC war at Sea collection.

I am torn on which to use for VaS. The WoTC models are basically ready to go and can be used for both games. On the other hand 1/6000 is great for large fleet actions in a smaller area, but the 1/1800 models are very nice and most of what I will likely do will be more smaller scale tactical engagements.

Here is a sample of my 1/6000 with 1/1800 in the background:

Anyways thanks for sharing!

The basing was partly because my main opponent was doing so, and partly in order to have fancy nametags for the ships. Yours are great as well; Kriegsmarine?

Kriegsmarine?

Thanks.

Actually UK and Kriegsmarine in that pic. All the units you need for Denmark straight on top(Bismark Prinz Eugen, Hood and PoW) and Battle of River on bottom (Graf Spee, Exeter, Ajax and Achilles).

I currently have all the majority of the Kreigsmarine painted along with all the USN and UK battleships.

I have dozens still in the bag waiting to be painted, but not sure if I will ever finish now that WoTC has expanded and keeps expanding the 1/1800 models.

I do have a few 1/2400 models I have based similar to your for AoD.

The only DD in that file that is not in the core book is the Akatsuki. It is an exact replica of the stats for the Akitsuki, which is clearly incorrect.

Armament for Akatsuki:

Armament:
3x2 127mm/50cal Cannon
2x 13mm MG
3x3 610mm Torpedo Tubes
18x Depth Charges

Akitsuki:
4x2 100mm/65cal DP
2x2 25mm AA
4x 610mm torpedo tubes
56x depth charges

I appreciate the update so I can correct it. Always trying to add or update the ships. Now to find out the stats for those numbers. I can only add what I can find for stated ships, which the fomula is a state secret.

DM. can you give us the stats for this ship?
Akitsuki:
4x2 100mm/65cal DP
2x2 25mm AA
4x 610mm torpedo tubes
56x depth charges

No, it's the Akatsuki. The Akitsuki (Why couldn't they have more than one letter difference?) is in OOB.

Akatsuki

1750 Long T (Mass, not displacement)
*edit - 1680 T displacement, not that it makes a difference*
38kt 8”
233 Crew 10/3

Armament:
3x2 127mm/50cal Cannon
2x 13mm MG
3x3 610mm Torpedo tubes (Type 91)
18x Depth Charges

I have similarly formatted data on all the IJN Destroyers from the Minikaze to the Tachibana, and am interested in stats for all. let me know if you have the time for the other 6 classes not covered here, DM.

Well Nat, I've now got the stuff I need to start actually basing my ships so hopefully I'll have my US stuff done in the near future. I'm going to do in a fell swoop 5 points of each class (but something like 18 destroyers :))

I just realized that there were no Yorktown class Aircraft carriers in the leyte gulf fleet pack so no Big E for now (Little wars for sure :))

Sounds good, lordgoober. I look forward to mercilessly cruching them.

Does anyone know if there is any extant data on warship turning radii, or if it can be deduced by such features as SHP and length?

What's even funnier is that most of my tags for my fletchers are about 50% longer than the ships themselves with one of them being almost double the length :)

yes 1/6000 is very small but easy on the wallet.
Thinking I should have went that way with what I have spent on ships and the storage.

If you guys are looking for some more 1/6000 I will be selling mine. I sold a bunch in a silent auction yesterday at NAVCON, but still have all my USN (Including most of the Pre-war BBs painted). Still have unpainted of RN, Italy and Germany.

If interested let me know and I can PM what I have before I put it on E-bay.

Finally decided I am going to use my 1/18000 for WWII and for now 1/2400 for WWI and Russo_Japanese.

Had a great time playing at NAVCON yesterday.

There were many games going including some VaS.

I may be interested in the Germans, depending on price point.

Also, 1:18,000??? I thought we went small scale! Where can you find such a thing, and is the detail totally lost?
