check those out, they are 6'x4' or 6'x8' and if you go through the order proccess you can specify you do not want Hexes on them :D

I'm in the market for a sand-color mat and found this company, also. I'm a little put off by the airbrushed/painted finish of the mats. Anybody seen these close up? The prices are great, but I was hoping for a flocked felt mat. I've found 1 for $40 USD, but I'll hold out until hearing if anyone has experience with these HOTZ mats.

I'm not sure why this is better than the 4'x4' pieces of felt I get at the local arts & crafts store. They only cost around $5. I've got them in black, green and tan.

Thee main point of the Hotz mats is that they have grids screen printed onto them for games that use things like hex grids. And then they have other designs printed or airbrushed onto them that would cost quite a bit extra to get at the same quality elsewhere.

The airbrushing of the space mats is very very well done and looks great close up. I cannot say much about the other mats although you can request certain designs left off or faded slightly.

I have one that and will get some pics fo ya. I was working on a new board for Memoir44 and A&AM. I need some desert and have been thinking about the one with no hexes...just not sure.

Cool. Space mat seems ok.

Edit: And you can have double sided mats too! great.

now that woudl be good, space on one side and sea on the other, perfect for VAS and ACTA

will have to look into that.

Here is a picture of the Space Mat I bought...

I was thinking the same thing. Unfortunatey the base color has to be the same on both sides. It's really meant for different size hexes or squares.

Any terrain that has a grid (hex or square) has one fatal flaw: Setup advantage. The person setting up second can instantly guage distance to bring his long-range stuff on the board where he can smoke his opponent's short-range stuff on turn 1. Other than this, the grid is very nice once play begins. Just adds a bigger emphasis on the first die roll of the game.

I've ordered a couple of these earlier this year, still awaiting delivery (my fault, not Eric's). But I did want to point out that while you can get doublesided mats, they must be the same base color. I wanted a doublesided mat that was a space mat on on side and and a sea/ocean mat on the other (to accomodate ACTA & VAS, respectively). Eric let me know that that was not an option.

That said, you want a space mat with no grid on one side and 1" grid squares on the other, they've got you covered.

Regards,
Larry

P.S.

Eargerly anticipating receipt of my mats any day nowtm.

Um, correct me if I'm wrong, but pre-measuring is allowed anyway, right? So all a grid does is make pre-measuring easier: seems like a plus to me. I don't like grids because they distract from the "diorama" quality of miniatures games, personally...

True on all counts, although I initially took the pre-measurement rule to not apply until after play had started, as this rule is mentioned after the rules for setup. Although, after reading the rule as it is stated, it says "you may always 'pre-measure' in Battlefield Evolution..." which leads me to believe you may do so upon setting up as well. The fact it is not part of the "Before the Battle" section is what lead me to my initial belief. Hmm, any other opinions on this out there? I can definitely see a case for both points of view.

I found this while searching the internet for gaming mats:

http://terrainmat.com/

The website is godawful, but the products are very impressive, and seem quite reasonably priced considering it's high-quality materials, pre-painted and such.

Indeed these mats are great, but they DO shed bits everywhere... For that natural ground/sea look they are spot on but I did not feel they lived up to the durability that had been promised. Don't get me wrong it hasn't fallen apart but the flock/paint has worn thin in places.
