Future Traveller - Testing the Waters

If you do the TAS book, i promise to buy a copy of every Traveller and 2300 AD book that you publish in the future!

Try something else, as well, just off the top of my hat - Heist In A Box; Tomb In A Box. A complete raid for a team of player characters, and a complete Ancient tomb to delve into.

Heist in a box would be a good idea considering how often Traveller games degenerate into infiltration missions..lol.

I'd also look at releasing the sourcebooks in epub and mobi formats alongside PDF, for downloading onto ereaders.

With epub3 coming on line, it would be a time to add special effects to the CRB. You could have ship gen, dice rollers, system gen etc. Especially fitting for s Sci-fi rpg.

I'd like miniatures for standard Traveller type races like Aslan, Hivers etc

Yes, but with the cost of metal/plastic minis - and having to paint them - I'd settle for cardboard ones *I have plenty of stands*

If you do more than PDF:

Any chance to go Amazon Kindle?

It has a good reader software for Windows and a good distribution and payment system (No need for CreditCard, Paypal and other primitiv methods)

Seconded

Basically, no - the standard Kindle (and I love mine!) cannot handle tables and does not do too well on graphics, meaning most RPGs are very poor on it. Something like Library Data would make sense (or possibly the Lone Wolf MPGB, at a stretch - and we are looking at that), but rules - and Traveller makes use of a _lot_ of tables - are out, I am afraid.

Well, after spending hundreds on MgT this year, I'd say what I would be more ships: Zhodani, Traders and Gunboats II; also more crunch tech stuff, reinvent the wheel with parallel development alien tech, amber zones for ideas, minor aliens like from the old JTAS. Though I would also ask for better art to show players.

And not just "amber zones," referring to the old JTAS adventures. A book on Amber Zones - setting them up, determining why the TAS saw fit to classify them as such - and Red Zones. Some creative ideas on why a system would be so dangerous that the Navy or Scouts would want to blockade it.

I like the idea of alien Traders & Gunboats and Fighting Ships. Potential lot of mileage there.

Amber Zones: This would get my vote. :D The original LBB set mentioned that the Scouts tended to blockade worlds with primitive, developing cultures - shades of the Prime Directive in Star Trek - while the Navy either treated Red Zones as gunnery test ranges or used them to cover-up little 'mishaps' that might be politically embarrassing.

And if I recall the original Traveller Adventure correctly, the world of Lewis got a Red Zone slapped on it thanks to political string-pulling by a Tukera Lines share-holder who had a major case of hissy-fit. But there are other potential reasons... bio-hazard, widespread nuclear fallout from a TL7 balkanised world 'pushing the big red button', and creepy unexplained disappearances where entire colonies vanish - leaving no sign that there was ever any settlement in the first place.

So an Amber or Red Zone coding doesn't just have to be because the locals are xenophobic nutjobs.

Stuff like the old Fasa ACS would be cool.

Which is a good example to handle a lot of things, a book of multiple things, such as amber zones or minor aliens, which I could lift and use in part in my campaign; a nuts and bolts book of why there are amber or red zones, I wouldn't buy.

I have not had time to read all the pages of replies so forgive me if this has already been answered...
What size of miniatures is Mongoose considering? If it's 25 or 28 mm then I will DEFINITELY and enthusiastically purchase any and all miniature sets. I do have some very old metal Traveller miniautes, including all the major Traveller Races. But for the most part my friends and I simply use Star Wars plastic minis for just about everything, because they are light, standard size that people are used to (If you want to attract Fantasy RPG'r that's what they expect in a mini) and come in a wide variety of types that can be used for just about any kind of Human Traveller character you can think of. That's how the D&D miniature series became so popular. There were sets of stand alone tactical combat games, complete with fold-out combat maps, but most people gobbled them up to use in their RPG games. If you go with 15mm size then I will never buy them. I use miniatures for RPG but as with the example above, the 25/28 mm size can be used in war games as well. Plus, people who play Starwars or other Sci-fi/near future games will probably buy your new traveller sets just to have some variety and flavor to their games. Don't forget to include robots, technicians, Engineers, Nobles, and other "non-combat" oriented minis used for flavor. Maybe 1 in each box?

So... 25/28 sized miniatures I WILL BUY AND SO WILL MY FRIENDS!!! :)
Also as a request, but I understand cost vs sales concerns, it would be GREAT if you could have a molding of the standard air/raft or GUV or even small armored G-Carrier at the 25/28 mm scale. Starwars has a couple of small vehicles I currently use for Traveller vehicles. I know it's a pipe dream, but hey... don't ask, don't get. :)

There are a few alien ships in Merchants and Cruisers.

Yes, I bought that the other day in the supplement bundle, there are some nice ships, but this one could use a second edition to clean up the deckplans.

I'd assume that such an 'Amber Zone' book would include a few sample worlds, say 2 or 3 from the Spinward Marches setting and a couple of 'plug-in' worlds a GM could drop in anywhere. A little bit like the 'focus worlds' given in the MgT Spinward Marches book, describing 2 worlds per subsector...

Worlds are a pretty heavy amount of work, IMTU I often have at least the three forms done, some encounter tables and a short write up. For Amber Zones, they could be placed on extant worlds, the SM are getting somewhat crowded though; but I am talking 1-3 page adventures and seeds. I know a lot of us GM's use them, even generically for ideas.

A book of base plans might also be handy.

I would love some PDFs for Paper Minis for Traveller, and have mooted the idea before, perhaps getting Precis Intermedia Games to do them in their Disposable Heroes line.

Has this been requested? Better Deckplans. I'd recommend graphics done as vector graphics files. I use PDFs a lot when I GM RPGs, usually with MapTools and zooming in on the current deck plans it looks very messy.
