Just to let you know, Planet Mongoose currently has an article comparing the relative merits of the Federation Frigate and Battle Frigate.

Also, we have just posted the Campaign Roster for CTA: Star Fleet here - http://www.mongoosepublishing.com/pdf/sfcampaignroster.pdf

cant wait to run a small wolf pack with these, 1 battle frigate and 2 frigates. just to add a nice quick strike escort for larger vessels.

oooh, i like that idea...

FF is agile, FFB is not, so you'll probably find the FFB outmaneuvered by its squadronmates. The SFU has "leader" variants of most ships. These leaders are intended to lead squadrons of similar ships as part of the battle group. They have a bit of extra shielding and a few extra phasers, plus command facilities. (I hope we shall see statlines for these at some point in the future...)

In the SFU canon, during the General War combat was so intense that frigate sized ships were dying in droves. As a result, all empires started beefing up their small ships. The Feds designed two: the battle frigate (an upgrade to the frigate) and the war destroyer (new design). Two FFBs were built historically IIRC. The FFB was found to be too small and cramped, whereas the slightly larger DW got the nod. Prior to the war, the FFBs were assigned to the Romulan border fleet which was considered by the Federation not likely to ever see any combat.

Sounds like the FFB is designed as a stablemate to the CA/CC/CB, moving in the battle line; whereas the FF should be engaging in flanking and other Agile shenanigans.

I like when ships have a well defined role in the fleet. It gives a justification for all ship classes in a well balanced fleet.

The FFB was a attempt to beef up the Frigate so it could still survive in Combat. The one thing that all the Empires in the War learned was that Frigates were literally flying egg shells armed with a big sledge hammer. In the end the Battle Frigate lost out to the War Destroyer which had all the same capabilities of the Battle Frigates and a hair more internal space.

Original there were 4 Battle Frigates built but once the design was made there were a couple of dozen conversions of other Frigates done. The majority of those probably were Escort (FBEs), Carrier(FBVs) or Scout (FBSs) versions but the recorders were never really clear how many were built. Another popular converson was to make Drone Battle Frigates (FBDs) by replacing 2 photons with Drone racks the ship freed up power that would have be used to arm Photons so it could be used for Movement or Shield Reinforcment. By the nd of the War many of the Battle Frigates found themselves religated to convoy escort missions.

I think we're missing the real point here, folks - isn't that the first two pictures of professionally painted Starline 2500 miniatures we're seeing in this Planet Mongoose update??

Where's the icon for 'Jump up and down and squeal like an excited schoolgirl'?

Wondered when someone would notice :)

Just two little ships to begin with, but bigger and more exotic ones will be appearing over the next couple of weeks!
