Free Giant Hyboria Map!!!

Xuthal (not Xuthol) is still in the jungle, rather in a desert.

The text is mostly still difficult to read. Perhaps increasing the opacity/thickness of the outline on the text?
 
Chrysagon, I love your map! I don't think it's easy to read the placenames too, Jason, are you sure you don't have your browser set to shrink the image, or maybe your monitor's resolution is causing difficulties? Or perhaps you're printing it, that could turn out hard to read I guess.

Anyhow, if you incorporate Vincent's changes you'll have created arguably one of the best maps of Hyboria that I have ever seen. It is absolutely gorgeous.

As a former web programmer, I know how to view an image online.

The text is easy enough to look at when viewed on a 21" screen set to 1600 x 1200 resolution (which I have), but it is just too small, too thin, and too close to the background stipple pattern to be distinct enough to read.

Other than printing it out as a massive image, or in chunks, it is of little use as a printout, as my color laserprinter, even at 600 dpi, does not produce a very readable version of the image. A nice onscreen image is of little use to me, personally.

I'm not criticizing his work - but he did ask for suggestions for improvement.

Not sure why he ignored my previous comment about Xuthal, though. It is in the desert. The story it is featured in mentions specifically the desert around it - for days in any direction.

I too am a Web programmer, and former designer, and was merely trying to be helpful. I've worked at a helpdesk too, and constantly surprised by how the simplest thing is usually the solution people are after. Sorry if I put you off by making suggestions that were well below your experience level, that was not my intent.

Surely a higher opacity on that white outline would help, especially with printouts. For me, a computer only map is still of great help, as I enjoy simplicity in the maps used at the game table, and handed out to the players, I don't even mind a few mistakes, as I doubt characters would be able to find very reliable maps of Hyboria. YMMV though. :)

Thanks for the comments. Please allow me to retort:

1 - I wasn't really worked up about the thing. My usual assumption on the web is that people know what they're talking about - aftwerwards, I let them prove otherwise. Having it suggested that I didn't know how to look at an image seemed kind of insulting, no matter how helpful Yokiboy was being.

The comment about the text being unreadable against the black stippled background came from my own experience in cartography (admittedly inferior to yours) and graphic design, and the fact that my office is full of artists and longtime gamers (I work for a computer game company), all of whom said "Man, that is hard to read that map." I had showed them it as I was considering using it for my upcoming campaign. Two attempts at printing it out ended with a lot of visual static.

2 - since I was commenting back to Yokiboy, I didn't feel it was necessary to use your name directly. Sorry if that felt rude - it's a perception issue about the nature of public forums.

Since you posted "I made a few changes according to the previous comments you all made. Please tell me if you think it is better." I was offering my opinion - that it hadn't gotten better and that my previous comments were neglected or ignored.

But anyway, this is waaaay too much discussion for such a little quibble over a stellar effort on your part. I humply apologize if my comments impugned that.

It is very cool to see people contributing to the game in any way they can, which is what's important.
 
I took no offense, just wanted everybody to stay cool. Did u tried the last version? I printed it yesterday on a A4 sheet and it was readeable except for a few cities names.
Anyway I'll take all your remarks in account for the next version available in a few hours. About Akbitana : I saw it on the Conrad map, but my scan was not good enough, so the mistake. When told about it I saw a akbatanan province at this place on a map from the Hyborian War game, so I thought it would fit. And the Road of Kings I used comes from the old TSR Conan RPG.
As a general fact I can say I've never found an Hyboria map similar to another in every games, books, etc... And maybe I finally like that. Hyborian times are an era of legends, cartography in these times was hard to develop. As "Historians" :D we have only a few documents to help us draw the maps. The work I propose you is just another version.
Maybe I'll propose a BIG version soon, printable on a A3 (I don't know if these standards are known is the USA ; A4 is 8.3 x 11.6 inches, A3 is 11.6 x 16.5 inches).
BTW I've worked in video game industry too for a while. I now teach CG and contribute in illustrating a french RPG magazine (maps again, but also interiors).

oh I forgot, about Xuthol, should it be placed more east, or is it at the right place but missing desert?

I think this is a really great piece of work Chrysagon, and your right certain people should calm down, no one is forced to look at it. Just put it down to a bad case of map envy!! :twisted:

I sound like a broken record with this, but Xuthal is not in the jungle - it's in the middle of a desert.

It doesn't make any sense geographically, but that's the way Howard wrote it.
 
Yes you are right, i was thinking about changing map color in this region, becouse both cities are in desert area, and i probably do it soon. i have lil problems with this www domain, so i'll change it soon and put updated map there, today modification - i cleared black and thunder river, which are messed up in Rabirian Mountains, and added Velitrium, i'll let you know about new adress and updated map soon.

The first 3 ones are for wall paper purposes, and the last for printing purposes. A lot of modifications have been made, mainly corrections. But many locations have been added (like towns and Amazonia and Juma's Kingdom). The 1024x768 version as been simplified for better looking.
I truly hope you all enjoy it. It is not meant to be THE map, just an interpretation among others.
