Flight Ops Capability on Crippled Carriers

I'm currently playing a mini-campaign solitaire. An aircraft carrier was crippled by torpedoes from a U-boat.

Can a crippled carrier launch & retrieve aircraft?

I didn't think it could, but I can't find it specifically mentioned in the rules.

What we do is roll for the carrier ability just like any other, if it is lost you can not launch or retrieve aircraft. I would think though if an aircraft carrier is crippled launching and retrieving aircraft would be the last thing they would be doing. It is more important to save the ship than the aircraft.

Thanks for the info, but I'm not sure what you mean by die-rolling against the carrier ability. (This is my first time using these rules).

I did find this on pg 13: "Ships with the Carrier trait may launch and recover two flights of aircraft as long as the ship is not crippled."

But I haven't found a numerical value to die-roll against.

The reason why I'm asking is: In my current solitaire game, the ability to launch aircraft is of strategic importance. The aircraft carrier is ferrying fighters through the Med and the aircraft are suppose to fly off to Malta.

Thanks again.

Assuming that the carrier isn't in imminent danger of rolling over and under or taking more torpedo hits - I would enact some sort of damage repair mechanic. 50/50 the repair parties manage to counter-flood and correct the list and patch holes sufficiently that she can come level, get back underway and fly them off. 50/50 she goes the way of Ark Royal. A bit arbitrary perhaps, but how would you rate their chances really?

Be mindful that carriers tended to go roll over pretty quickly when torpedoed and often with most/all hands (Glorious, Courageous, Ryujo, Shoho). Like Ark, the ship would be abandoned pretty quickly if saving her was in doubt to avoid loss of life.

You quoted it, from page 13.

Traits are rolled for when a ship becomes crippled, same as turrets. On a 4+ it is lost (page 8 )

Also, carriers cannot launch or recover if they have a fire burning (oob page 16)

I think the OP was after a ruling on what could happen /after/ the battle, where the ship has already lost the trait.

As I said, I would roll a 50/50 for the ship after the battle to see if she is kept seaworthy and brought in to Malta, or abandoned. Maybe adjust this if she still has escorts with her that could tow/assist.
