Fleet Carrier in campaigns

For me the question was on VPs not cost to bring to the fight.

Right now the cost for upgrading the flights can be distributed over several ships, and is attached to none of them for vp purposes as far as I can tell. This is why I don't like the flight upgrades... with flights coming from ships not giving vps you can't account for the VPs of putting the better flights on the table.

That is an interesting point but may not be important in a campaign. In my group's campaign (razin is actually doing all the hard work as manager - not me), the cost of upgraded fighters is figured into the FAP costs for the battle. So, as the Centauri player, if I bring in a Balvarian Carrier with 2 upgraded flights from Razik/Sentri to Rutarian (2 Patrol FAPs), I am bring in one less Demos or with one upgraded flight I am bringing in a Kutai instead of a Demos. From my perspective, bringing in one less Demos is a big trade-off. In a campaign, I am concerned about winning the battle & taking/holding the strategic objective, not about victory points, so I don't think about victory points in a campaign.

The rules are unclear about replenishing 'upgraded' fighters. My take on it, is the Carrier doing the repairing, so you could repair the normal fighters the ship can carry. In your example, I'd allow you to replenish Razik/Sentri's for free, but ask that you pay 1-2 RR for the Rutarian upgrade (those spare parts are a lot harder to get hold of). Another option might be to just half the number of upgraded fighters you can replenish.
I'd agree with this. The carrier can replenish its normal complement of fighters or other craft for free. Anything else costs extra. If you paid extra to upgrade them to something better, then managed to lose the better fighters in combat, you get to pay extra to replace the superior fighters. So, if you have a Balvarian, you get Sentris for free. You pay extra to upgrade them to Rutarians. Despite the superiority of the Rutarians, you manage to lose them anyway. Centauri high command thinks you're an idiot and gives you a few squadrons of replacement Sentris, as it would to any Balvarian commander. If you're feeling rich, you can pay to upgrade them to Rutarians again. Otherwise, tough - Centauri high command values its Rutarians and has sent them to someone else who won't get them destroyed. :)

As for VP's, I think you should get VP's for anything you destroy, regardless of where it came from. As the commander of a Starfury squadron, you don't care whether that flight of Nials hyperspaced in or was just launched from the nearest Sharlin - if you manage to kill it, you want your kill credit. :)

Seems sensible - any reason why not I have missed ? :?:

Ship launched fighters are costed into the value of the ship (see page 49).

Wipe out a Poseidons load of Starfuries? Score nothing. Wipe out the Poseidon, score a War VP, regardless of how many Starfuries are currently surviving. :?

It's another one of those discussions that crops up now an again. Like the WAHHH! Stealth is busted and stuff.

It's something I can only really see working if you pay for the ship and the fighters separately, so that you know how much the ship is worth when you destroy it. That in turn is pretty unworkable unless we switch to a standard points system instead of the current vaguely exponential system.

Came up due to Greg asking if you counted the flights for VPs.

In campaign it still matters as you still win each battle based on VPs.
