First ship painted...

Today i finally painted my first vessel, so it`s just waiting for the pre-order of the book to arrive to put to the high seas.

Playing the Italian navy, it was no more then normal that the mightiest battleship ever (okay, one of the visually internationaly recognised as one of the most beatiful classes of ships) to set sail, the Littorio.

I placed some ships from other games, sci-fi related, to give an idea of the size of the ship. Model is a GHQ Micronaut.

I think she may be alittle outgunned though, judging by that photo. I don't think her side protection system would work too well against photon torpedoes :)

Seriously though, its always nice to see a model of what I agree is probably the most aesthetically pleasing battleship class (and my personal favourite, thanks to my brother's modelling skills and thud hid very nice 1/1200 model from Almark). Can I suggest avoiding painting gun barrels in black or dark grey? Although the barrel ends woudl become blackened with "GSR" after a prolonged shoot the main part of the barrel would generally not be so dirty. Its a personal thing, but although I like my models to look weathered (rust streaks, the odd dent and worn bit of paintwork etc.) I tend to keep black on the barrels to the muzzles.

Hey Tom,

nice ship (thx for reminding me I need more Med based targets :P ) with a intruiging base...I assume it's metalsheet, the same as you use for the other models?

Speak to you soon (more like next year ;) )

@ DM: actually they are gunmetal with ink, but the flash on the cam makes it look a little darker then they actually are. Don`t forget the Littorio`s tropede defense was the (unsuccesful) Pugliesi system, those side turrets and cannons where the AA batteries so they should have some success against flying ships with photon torpedoes

@ Gunbird: yep, same stuff for basing as always, though it will have the Vallejo Med added, my LGS just hasn`t received the stock order yet from his distributor.

Another bit of naval trivia from the mind of DM - a few years ago I atended a series of meetings at the Italian Naval HQ in Rome. The meetings were held in the Pugliese Conference Room, obviously named after the famous designer. The room was adorned with pictures of the Littorios and models of the torpedo defence system. And another bit - somewhere in my study I have copies of the damage reports for the Italian battleships at Taranto. The Italian engineers and draughtsmen tasked with drafting the report put an enormous amount of work, even putting in shading on their drawings to render the curved sides of the turrets.

Maybe it would be better if I saw it in person. . . but I guess I'm not seeing why this ship is so hot. (The design. . the model is very nice!)

Sure, its a nice looking ship, but I don't know if its so much better than others out there that I could easily say it was THE BEST looking ship!

Soulmage I think we're talking about the class. The Littorio class of BB's were very handsome vessels.
Like you said.

Yes Very nice indeed! and this one's better painted than my ships are...I really need to slow down!

And she has some friends now...

The Trento-class cruiser Trieste

and the destroyers Alvise da Mosto, Antonio Da Noli and the sole survivor of this class from WW2, Nicoloso Da Recco. I actually have 6 painted up, namely Leone Pancaldo, Luca Torigo and Ugolino Vivaldi but as they still need to be varnished they still need to get on the picture as well.

So the battlegroup atm looks like this

The next ships will be Trento, Vittori Veneto and two ships as far as i can remember haven`t been included in the book (still waiting for my copy to arrive) namely the Condotieri class Duca D`Aosta and the aircraft carrier Aquila.

Are you planning on doing something else for the bases more permanantly later or something?

The models look great, but the bases really detract from the great painting IMO.

I've been having good success with GW regimental bases (although larger ships need two put together). Otherwise balsa wood would be fine too, just needs to actually be a base for the entire ship, not just part of it.

Anyway, my two cents. . .

They will be covere in vallejo mediterrean, but the size stays the same. We use blue TSS tiles at the club anyways, so you don`t `see` the bases during play as being shorter then the ships.
