Fire and Sword Fourh Edition Download login-free

Hi,

You no longer have to log into the BRP Central site to download Fire and Sword.

For those who don't know me, or Fire and Sword, I was a co-author RQ 1&2 and have produced a new system, Fire and Sword. The new system is related to RuneQuest, in that it is skill based, has different magic systems for shamanic, divine and sorcerous magic, etc. It differes from RQ in that the combat system is much streamlined, the rules for economic and social status are considerably extended, etc. The rules for incapacitation and healing are also a litte more sophisticated than they were in RQ. The Fourth edition of Fire and Sword is now available. The URL is:

There are a number of supporting items, such character sheets, combat charts, an early version of a setting description, and a discussion of why I wrote the rules the way I did at:

Even if you aren't interested in using the system, it may have something to offer your RuneQuest game.

Ray,

Ray,

It looks a very interesting system: I think I will give it a try.

On a quick read I have a couple of comments: Combat seems to be extremely deadly. With the "higher roll wins" scheme, assuming competent adversaries about half the attacks launched at you will hit. Damage is roll higher as well, so about half the hits will wound. About 1/3 of wounds leave you dying or dead. That means that you will be rendered dying or dead about once every 12 attacks launched against you. Armour will help a bit, but still, owch. In fact, you will be killed (inevitably or rolling against Con -7) every 40 attacks. That means a dead PC every ten fights. That's quite a lot.

The other thing is, There seems to be a lot of difficulty in becoming a healer. There are a lot of very specific cure spells: You'll need Reset Bone, Restore Vision, Cure Madness, Regenerate, Heal Body, Cure Flesh Rot and Healing or, preferably, Greater Healing just to cover the possible results of a normal combat. That's 16 POW and Champion status, and you'll probably want Resurrection and a few Cure (other) Specific Diseases as well. And there is no other way to be a healer than Divine Magic, apart from Herbalism, which is extremely random and can't be done as needed, and a minor healing spell in Sorcery. No mundane healing skills at all?

I think most of the system looks great, but I will be examining the damage and healing systems very carefully.
