FGMP radiation damage

Myrm

Mongoose
Firing a fusion gun, man portable is described as doing 2d6x20 rads to everyone 'in the immediate vicinity'.

Is that from where its fired, where it is targetted, or both?

How do people rate the vicinity (close short medium etc) and distance based decay (im thinking inverse square here so half for each range band perhaps)

I think the radiation effects propagate along the entire path the shot travels. Not sure what the intention of "vicinity" but I'm assuming no effect past short range.

Well that would be a new twist, especially since the old CT FGMP-15 could be fired without having to wear Battle Dress.

In the CT the only hazard firing PG and FG was due to the high recoil, and that only on the lower tech models of each (which required the user to be wearing BD for the strength bonus). The higher tech models included grav compensation built into the weapon.

Some later rules introduced an area effect damage iirc, like an explosive round.

So imo if the idea is to mirror CT the extra damage is a splash radius effect at the terminus of the shot only. So heed the friendly user caution on the weapon and don't fire it in an small enclosed space

Yeah, trying to figure out rad damage along the entire path sounds a bit too much like "work" (the evil antithesis of "fun").

Yeah it seems like more work than it's worth, but then the sentiment I'm hearing in a recent thread on CotI seems to be that it is indeed the intent of the rule.

I thought I recalled there being a need for some heat protection in one rule set (TNE it turns out, minimum Combat Armor iirc) but still don't recall the radiation added in T4 apparently (but I never had Emperor's Arsenal).

So, I guess Mongoose has precedent to back up the idea.

Then if that is the case I think the entry needs to be re-written to be:
a) Clear on intent
and
b) Clear on how this should play out.
