Everway

As there is this wonderful forum to post suggestions, I'd like to mention a game I have and that deserves more attention.

There is an out of print role playing game that I'd dearly love to see back in print: Everway. It was created by Jonathan Tweet of D&D fame, originally published by Wizards of the Coast before they got into D&D, and while it received lots of popular acclaim, it didn't do so well sales-wise. It's a pity, because the game is really, really good: it's a rules light game where the randomness does not come from the use of dice but from a tarot deck. It does sound weird, but it works quite well - with the right Game Master and the right players.

It would need a bit of rewriting as well - for starters, WotC were hoping to pull a Magic The Gathering, and made a role game with collectable cards. And the thing is that it was not really necessary at all, it feels like it was just stuck in to cash on the collectable card game craze that made WotC what they are. That could go, and with no regrets.

Furthermore, the standard setting needs lots more detail. Monte Cook wrote a book, Spherewalker, giving lots of wonderful detail; that could be the starting point for more information. And Everway is also good for other scenarios; online I found people using it for Star Wars and many other things.

Lastly, the system needs some kind of support of character progression. The way Everway is now, advancement is done mostly acquiring new magical items, knowledge and powers; it is actually a great idea, but it needs to be refined and systematized.

To the best of my knowledge, the rights to Everway now belong to a company called Gaslight Press, who is doing bloody nothing with it, not even updating their site since 2002. As far as I know, they're dead. And another interesting tidbit, Jonathan Tweet, the original author, is now between jobs; maybe he'd be interested in getting back to his own work?

I actually don't expect naything to happen. Everway's dead, the rights owners are out of business, and noone is going to pick this game up, I fear.
