Energy Weapons in Space Combat

I saw something at the weekend that made me think of this.

For a thousand years the third Imperium has had countless millions of ships flying around. Trillions of flight years of those fusion plants dumping exhaust into the systems, quadrillions of jumps where leakage from the jump field leaves a cloud of exotic particles or gases behind the ship (that fluoresce nicely with the jump grid). Almost as many jump emergences where the remains of the jump cloud are simply released into space along with any jump space dust that is travelling with the field.

Uncountable numbers of ships smashed into debris by war and accidents. Vast numbers of asteroids mined with nothing but spoil and dust left over. All the rubbish dumped from every ship that ever flushed its waste into space. All the rubbish ever launched into space by any of the ten thousand worlds.

Before the third Imperium was the second and before that the first. The Solomani found the Sol system to be clean with long sensor ranges because the Vilani hadn’t been dropping rubbish, dust, dirt and assorted other stuff in the system for millennia.

Once they spread into inhabited space they found their sensors significantly shortened due to the crap floating in every system

In short Inhabited space is under a smog cloud caused by thousands of years of modern industry and transport

Just an aside about 'sand'. I don't recall in which book I read it, but 'sand' barrel's can be manufactured on any planet TL6 or above. So it can't be terribly exotic stuff.
