Empire of the Petal Throne

Ah, I know its had a few goes at RPG success, but its been through hell and high water, several incarnations, lots of bad luck/poor management/problematic egos, or whatever, but its still a great background. Possibly one of the best RPG game worlds ever. It certainly ranks alongside Middle-earth, Glorantha, the Young Kingdoms and the Hyborian Age in its depth. Great alien cultures, (well, you can always make the ahoggya extinct), in the Hlyss and Ssu, rich history, characters, etc., etc.. Possibly the only game world never to have a constant, workable and supported set of rules to go with it, though many have tried.

Runequest would be a great fit. It has well-rounded deities, like in Glorantha, hero cults, colourful prehistory, heck, its just crying out for the MRQ treatment! It could even work as an alternative setting for the Conan system, as it has echoes of the Hyborian Age in its S&S elements as well as its dark treatment of sorcerous practice.

The sad part is they did. Sounds like the book was pretty much written. Turns out their license with the Howard estate (or whomever holds the license) is for one game, and the licensor considered the MRQ book a second game.

Ahhhh Tekumel! My favorite fantasy setting! Sadly, I'm yet to find a set of rules for this EPT that I like: The setting has evolved well past the scope of the original TSR rules (though, out of them all, they are my favorite), Swords & Glory and Tekumel: Empire of the Petal Throne are way too crunchy for my taste, Gardisyal has too many holes in them.

I have no knowledge of RuneQuest's rules, so I can't say of the rules will fit.

There, we have two (count 'em!), two votes for EPT! Well, sort of, but you are absolutely right, its a quality setting thats never, really, had a quality set of rules to go with it. There were some rules online that, I think, Sandy Petersen did for a Tekumel RQ, but they were for 2nd edition, and not very complete.

I'm looking at the Dragon Warriors demo from Free RPG Day and I'm thinking that this might be a good candidate for EPT gaming. I'll have to pick up a copy of the full game to make a final decision.

Why has this not been already done?

Lord Ksárul commands it made so!!!

Why? So it may languish in the Prince of the Blue Room's Temple in Bey Su, gathering dust? However, our Great Lord Thumis would make the rules availble to all! All praise the God of Wisdom!

Pah!!!

It would just get forgotten in the never-finished encyclopedia of that conservative fool High Princeps Gámalu hiBeshyéne... at least the glorious temple of 'He Who Confronts the Inner Being of Reality' would actually do something with it!!!

(Clicking of fingers...)

You have no love for the High Princeps of Lord Thúmis?

Perhaps you should have embraced "The Blue" of Húrsha - "He Who Is Curious", rather than that of the limpid grey....

Hi BS! (Sorry, your initials weren't meant as an insult! :) )

It's not. Stondraeg roughly translates as "fellow child of earth and stone". Ston being obvious, raeg being child and the d being a joining letter :p.

Yes, Ive heard those, thanks. The series seemed to end sharpish after the GM decided to try to convert to the Tri Stat system (now dead?).

I'm not sure about dead. The Whartson Hall crowd tend to play lots of different systems and do a lot of one shots rather than campaigns. They've also been plagued with illness and work making it difficult to arrange sesisons recently. I'm not sure if they're planning on picking up Tekumel again sometime soon but I could ask. They generaly lean towards superhero type games (and a load of other stuff too).

I must say the intro for their Traveller sessions is just beautiful 'though :).

Oh, and they got an interview with Matt Sprange up there when they maanged to corner him at a convention too :). Sorry, I can't find a direct link just now.

Yes, I meant that your initials spelt BS, like a short term for bull"@!$. :D

I also meant that the Tri Stat system was dead, rather than the game that these guys have recorded. It has been a while since their last Tekumel podcast, however. Maybe the one weakness that Tekumel has is that players have to have done a bit of homework, you can't step off that little boat in Jakalla harbour every time. I don't think all of the players in that podcast understood the different setting.

I agree that the intro to the Traveller episodes are great, certainly inspired! I like the intro to Yog-Sothoths podcasts too, scary!

I heard the Matt Sprange one, Yog Sothoth also had an interview with Keith Herber not long before his untimely death which was very entertaining, Keith certainly seemed like a character!
