However, rereading the description of Mechanic, I think you are right, this would be the best skill to use. Complex electronic locks might use Engineer (Electronics), but most locks, even simple electrical locks will use Mechanic to pick it.

A suggestion then, that perhaps with a rather general skill list such as this, it may be useful to allow a character's background to play in to what they can accomplish with the skill?

What I mean is, perhaps a Tradesman (or whatever the name of the similar career is) could use Mechanic to pick a lock because he has knowledge of how it probably works, but a Rogue could use Deception because he has practical experience in picking lots of locks?
