Drow war campaign questions.

I just wanted to know whether the Drow war campaign was worth the money?

I was considering picking it up, but do not want to buy something that I cannot use.

Is it worth the money? Absolutely!

Is it perfect? No. There are a lot of typos, errors, inconsistencies and gaps in the books but, with a it of DM work, it has the makings of a fantastic campaign. My group is about half-way through the first book but, even this far in, my group is enjoying it more than any other campaign I've run in the last 20+ years.

Some bits of it need a bit of work, some need a lot of work, but overall I'd rate it as one of the best campaigns ever created. Just be prepared to do a bit of prep for each chapter.

I've found it to be quite interesting...

I have not run it yet, but it is put aside to run as a campaign when my current D&D game ends.

I bought the first book. It looks promising, but will need a lot of work because

1) I'll be running more experienced heroes through the first adventures, not newbies, and

2) I plan to convert the campaign to Runequest, and add side adventures on Glorantha, the Iron Kingdoms, and other settings.

From what I have read of the two of them, the Drow war is more of a scripted adventure than the other one.

The other one is a nice boxed set, with location information and some background stuff. I can't remember all of it as its been a while since I read it. But it would be the easier of the two to convert if you need to.

This is quite frankly the best long-reaching campaign I've ever seen. I bought the World's Largest Dungeon when that came out, but it turned out to be really lacking in plot and despite my best efforts to inject it with my own plot devices, I couldn't salvage it enough to make my gaming group enjoy it. The Drow War is similar to WLD in scope, but there's a really rich story here that a DM can just grab and run with. Also, I've never seen a module that handles the high-level stuff so well.
The group I have playing this one are now level six, and they already salivate at the very thought that it's our weekly game night. Go out and grab that bad boy and let me know what you think when you're running it (email vinnierouge2003@yahoo.com).

There are issues with it but I would say it is a good campaign. We are on to book 2 now. http://www.shokaster.com/roundrobin/viewtopic.php?t=565

Again this is the best series of modules I have seen published in a long time. I love the Drow as a enemy. But, sadly I does take alot of DM work- if you have a group like mine who look through most encounters, like: Not just there is a trio of wanted bandits on the road ahead, but 'what are they wanted for'.

So it calls for more DM prep that most.

Campaign update: they are about to traverse under the mountains to the planar nexis of Barstirak.

Peace!

I have to agree with most and disagree with some.

I think a) it's a great game, my players love it, and b) it's fairly easy to run.

I'm a first time DM, with only about 4 years of gaming experience under my belt. Sure, in a couple of places, you have to put a door on the map where one has been left out (or a kitchen... little things). However, I find the combats well described and fairly easy to run, the plot threads are consistent, and my players eagerly try to tie things together (sometimes things that don't go together). You need a fair bit of common sense, and the ability to wing it every once in a while, but it's a fantastic campaign.

I'm running two separate groups through the game. We've been playing (weekly) for about 8 months, with a total of 10 players, 5 in each group. My player attrition is exactly 0. I recently found out that a woman who plays in one game was offered a new, and better, job that would have required a move. She and her partner (who also plays) decided that they couldn't leave, in a large part because they wanted to finish drow wars.

Run it - you'll love it, and your players will too.

Total agreement with both your observations, Jinta.

I'm a wizened old GM with 30 years of gaming experience who is running this game with a set of teenagers who are new to the hobby. The campaign appeals to all of us.

After a long hiatus, I have begun maintaining our campaign website(s) again. Please check them out, but be warned that the blog contains spoilers and should be kept from your players.
