[Dredd] Medical issues in character creation.

Hey everyone.

Just picked up both Dredd and Traveller the other day. Got to say, loving what I'm reading so far. Excellent stuff! Though unfortunately I'm jumping in at the deep end, since I'm practically a Traveller newbie and the prospect of running Dredd with a group of other newbies is looming.

Basically the Traveller core rules make reference to characters being billed for Injuries and Medical Care at the end of rolling through your creation terms.

Now obviously Judges are pretty much provided for by the Justice Department, but it just seems a little odd to me that a rookie can lose an eye or some such in training, and not be outfitted with a cybernetic substitute or something similar.

As far as Dredd is concerned are we assuming that even with the best medical care available you're still going to incurr a penalty to your statistics regardless of top notch medical treatment, or am I simply looking at this incorrectly?

I've read a fair few stories in the past that clearly show Mega City's tech level can easily deal with missing limbs and such. Night of the Rad Beast, anyone?

But still, I'd be keen to know what you think.

Not to mention: 'Drokk! The stubb gun got his arm'
'Forget it. I needed to lose weight anyhow' <--- Legend

my view is unless the character is killed the justice department will repair them, dredd himself has a pair of bionic eyes...

that said if you look at some of the mechanical prosthetics that some of the tutir judges have, is that because there isn't the bionic technology .. well no.. but it might be more of a "not wanting to be less than human" in a judge that would mean the long walk or the academy in a cadet ... well maybe he accepts the bionic replacement?

Well that's fair enough. But having said that, are we suggesting that a lost arm would net you a -4 dex/str penalty rather than simply a -2 with a mechanical prosthetic limb?

I'm simply trying to work out how much those academy injuries do impact your Judge once you hit the streets? Don't get me wrong, I love character building and all that stuff, but it does seem a bit off that the Justice Department wouldn't do something to recover the Judge's mobility.

depends on how good the prosthetic is ... as a GM you can always choose to "make it right" for your campagin... but do bear in mind that some characters get killed in generation not very many, and some fail to graduate, a few...

Well technically, a lot of the "Arm Blown Off" can be fixed (using the Traveller Rules). Off the top of my head wasn't it Prog's mid 390 to mid 400's or so where the City of the Damned story was, and where Dredd gets fitted with Bionic Eyes....

Thing is in the Traveller Rules.......less is more. Still I think there are plenty of examples that the cybernetics and such, are pretty darn good in Dredd's domain, and we know the cloning tech is as well.

There just isn't the balancing equation, of having to repay such thing money wise. THOUGH, one could look at it from an accounting and records point of view.

Years back one issue even had the Justice Department using the body of a permenantly insane judge in a transplant-op where the healthy brain of a Street Judge recently crippled in action was put into it.
Agree there is some excellent technology available. That said, very severe injuries can take weeks of time.
After the Pasha incident Rico took five weeks and Giant seven before they were back on the streets.
