Dreadnoughts, Dreadnoughts everywhere.... why?

Just got the federation reinforcements, and I am just wondering why every box gets a dreadnought? They seem to only be good in larger fleets, and the battles where you involve more then one would be rare, and fluffwise they are supposed to be rare as well. So why do we get so many of them? Wouldn't an extra heavy/fast cruiser be more sensible?
Edit: Couldn't we have the Fast cruisers in instead? You'd then get one of each of the more common ship types.

The squadron boxes match the ships that appear in specific Federation Commander sets.

Boxes 1, 2 & 3 match ships in Klingon Border
Boxes 7, 8 & 9 match Romulan Border ships.

ADB produced starline 2400 squadron boxes in this way. The Mongoose/ADB partnership produce new, bigger, shinier ships in the same way.

If you're looking for optimum composition of your fleet you're not buying ANY of the box sets anyway.

Sure you get a dreadnought with every box set, but how many useless strike Cruisers do you have? Police Cutters? Frigates? None of those ships are really..."optimal".

I've got over 1500 pts of feds and not a single ship is useless. I don't really find the box sets that good of a deal if I'm only using two of the ships in the squadron on a regular basis.

Bright side? You've got ships to trade with guys like me!

Whoa! Shane! There you are! How's it going, buddy? I didn't know you posted here too, nor that you had an ACTA blog. Totally adding you to my blogroll.

Anyway, I got the two squad boxes for myself, plus one or two blisters of Fed ships, and then the Klingon fleet box. I suppose one nice thing about getting a fleet box is you can pair it down to what you REALLY want, since you get about 2,500 points in a fleet box, compared to a regular game being 1,000-1,500 points. I'm sure my Fed force is far from "optimal", but given it's an uphill battle just to FIND someone to play with in my area (I tried running an intro game event at my local store once, even offering free ships to anyone who came, and no one showed up. It's all about 40K and Warmachine, unfortunately), I'm not too worried about that yet.

I've been here since the GET-GO! I just don't post as much because I've got the same local problem as you do with "not enough players". This is also what causing my blog to not be updated as much as I would like as well. That along with another crappy year of regular life sh!tstorms.

I saw that same issue with the box set happening for me. The way I see it, the box set isnt really a good buy if all you use are just a very few ships out of the set. I may pay more per ship since I buy them all as singles, but every one of my ships get's use. I don't have a bunch of units sitting on my shelf that see no use because of how useful they aren't.

No, my ships sit on the shelf b/c I cannot get any games in!

One thing about my blog, my fed fleet is pretty well bought and completed. It's also next on the list of painting projects after I finish the last three models on a Bloodbowl team I'm using. I may post some updates there soon. It's been a long time, too long. Look for a post soon about a local ACTA:Star Fleet tournament on the first weekend in December. I'm going to test the waters with it. I'm waiting until I get actual permission to run it on the saturday. I figure that would be better for the attendance for out of towners than running it on sunday...so I'm trying to do that instead but havent gotten the "go ahead" yet.

...it may almost be time to start collecting klingons, gorn, or roms. perhaps all three!

To be fair the only ships I don't use from the fleet box are the callahans really (they are cute, but think you'd need to take them in huge numbers to be effective) and in the squadron box I reckon if I start playing bigger games (3000pts) I will proberly use the battlecruiser, and will do the dreadnought in case, who knows, but I'm not sure what to do if I ever get another box. Mind you, the only ships I want to get to effectively finish my fleet is a couple more more wolverines, another blister or two of Ramius, another Keasange and possibly a manta ray.
A box with with a couple of fast cruisers, possibly a light cruiser and some war destroyers/battle frigates would be good.

Some of us do use all the ships in the box... plus!

I suppose if you are just looking for the best fleet you can put together for X points, you are right. Personally, I'm more interested in putting togther a comprehensive and balanced collection, so that I can play everything from police actions to convoy escort to cruiser duels to grand fleet clashes (in other words, I'm a scenario player, not a competative player). 8)

For me, the big Fleet Boxes make a great core to build around. Unfortunatly the Squadron and Reinforcement boxes don't work very well with the Fleet boxes, for exactly the reason the OP stated, too many DN's. So, after the Fleet Box I'm just filling out my collection with individual ships. Not the most economical way to go, but at least I don't end up with ships I don't want or need.

That's it, the dreadnoughts are a large investment in most games, and whilst I am not competitive and prefer scenarios and fluff (I play thousand sons in 40k) and the fleet box has given me a great start, and I am happy with the federation reinforcements box, I wouldn't get another one to add to my fleet. (That is also partly because of the fact I want to get a manta ray, a couple of Kearsages and a blister or two of Ramius and another Wolverine, but it is also I have no idea what I would do with a third dreadnought apart from possibly convert it... do have a few ship ideas.)
It's the same problem with 40k, why are all these Captains/chaos lords/Dreadnoughts leading all of these tiny patrols/strike forces/fleets, surley they have more important thing to do then lead every 10 man patrol/5 ship convoy?

Just remember in the far future you will need every ship you can get when the **** box shaped guys show up. But I agree with others the idea is to make your fleet able to play all kinds of different scenarios large, small. Maybe a police cutter chasing a pirate smugler or bandit transport.

Another thing to remember - the Dreadnoughts will no longer be king of the hill when the Battleships turn up (and they are imminent :)).

A Battleship?....... the name itself conjures images of some giant, sleek, warship similar yet different to the federation class dreadnought jumping out of warp, it's mighty phaser banks and titanic volleys of photon torpedoes swatting D7'S like flies and making captains of C8's divert all power to shields.
Also got three guys interested/seriously thinking about starting Star fleet, also got them thinking about BFG :p but one is defiantly leaning towards Call to arms, will show him the war era ships and the main rule book on Monday so he can see the non federation ships.
How many more ships are roughly planned for the differnt empires? Are we going to see more federation war era ships?

Keep in mind that the Battleships tend to be rather un-maneuverable, so as long as you can stay out of their heavy weapon arcs, you should be able to put the hurt on them. Assuming the phasers don't discourage you. :D Not to be taken lightly, but they aren't going to slaughter cruisers wholesale (unless said cruisers do something stupid).
