Down Ports and towns

Jak Nazryth

Mongoose
Last game was the introduction but tonight my campaign goes into high gear. I have a few sketches and 1 example of a down port, but I also copied a pdf. of my local airport (used for passenger information) so I can print off, make some minor changes, and use it for a possible downport as well. Has anyone used downloadable images of their favorite towns, cities, airports, etc... for use as a good Traveller space port?
Any ideas of which modern day airports, shipping ports, city maps etc... might make a good type C, B, or even A downport?
Thanks.

Hong Kong International Airport and Tokyo International Airport (the new
ones) look quite futuristic, and so does the skyline of Shanghai.

The Alliance Airport (designation AFW) north of Ft. Worth, Texas USA is a Freight Only Airport with several large aircraft hangars around it. It might be good for a Class-C downport, or a small Class-B. It is NEAR Ft. Worth Texas, but not part of it, so you have a bit of a separation from the "capital", but it has a 'startown' around it. You will have to ignore the Texas Motor Speedway a couple of miles north of it though (or not).

Really? I didn't know about that one.
I downloaded the pdf layouts of DFW (Dallas-Fort Worth). I was thinking of using Love Field as well, but some of our European friends might have ideas of airports and towns that are more "compact" and not spread out over several miles (kilometers) in open flat land.
The links Rust posted are pretty cool. I'll look for any pdf's or maps that I can print out and trace over etc... to add landing pads, etc...

Oh, I also finally got Mongoose "Starports" and there are grid lines on a couple of the examples for their downports, but there is no scale. Does anyone know what the scale's are supposed to be on those layouts? 100 meter grid? 200 meter grid?
Thanks

Schiphol ( http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?rlz=1T4ADRA_enGB339GB340&q=schiphol+airport&um=1&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&hl=en&tab=wl ) is a pretty good model of a port with towns close by.

Heathrow is another good one ( http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=Heathrow+Airport&um=1&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl ).

Mssr Jak,

the level of detail of a Downport I provided my gamers required a varying level of degrees.
1) First off, did I intend to have further adventures besides the planned one there? If I did not, descriptive words were all I needed.

2) If this was a Downport where further adventures would begin/ end at, then I would provide a map & such.

3) Though decanonized material, Judges Guild had a small hardcopy/deadtree module with dozens of small hex-mapped such ports, and their AD & D line had several for villages and towns. Ready-made, cheap, B & W art, and all aerial views.

4) Now if you're getting real-world detail and such, the above posters have given you a plethora of sources , and you Oh GM, have some leg-work to do!

Last, but not least enjoy your game, and allow the players to do so as well.

Mercator in Dist 268 seems like a PERFECT home base for Traveller characters... High population, high tech level, type C star port, LAW LEVEL 2!

I can see the bartender now... diving behind the bar yelling "No blasters!"

I enough for tonight but as the campaign develops I would like a wide range of gppd material on hand.
Thanks.

You can get the Judges Guild 50 Starports book on the Apocrypha-2 CD rom on the Far Future website. It's at - http://www.farfuture.net/Contents%20CDROM%20Apocrypha-2.pdf

I have the original paper version. You have to decide what the various facilities are going to be, but at least you have a layout of the base to start from.

Heathrow is another good one ( http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?q=Heathrow+Airport&um=1&hl=en&ie=UTF-8&sa=N&tab=wl ).

Your ship has been given clearance to land at terminal 5. Cargo, spares and any particularly slow-moving crew members will be lost for months.

Rotterdam harbour is also good - there are quite a few Google Streetview images from within the cargo terminal, which make for good downport views with cargo containers, cranes, etc.

An existing class E starport ;)

Getting a good collection of possible downports now. I suck at photo shop, but I might be able to alter some google earth images and add landing pads, several star ships parked in various places etc...
Thanks for the ideas everyone! :)
