Different ship sizes an example

I have asked Agis over on his thread if he could possibly post some pictures of different sized ships. In the back of my mind I knew there was a site with something comparable and now I have remembered. It is for HMS Hood - follow the link and take a look at the column on the right. I would have put the pictures directly here, but maybe the people from the H.M.S Hood Association might get a little agitated. It does not have every manufacturer, but it’s a start.

One thing I've always thought about the "Hood" was her gracful lines. She was truly one of the most beautiful silhoutes of WW2 battleships.

Hood was a graceful ship. Larger, powerful built yet at the same time not just a lump of metal or boxlike. Also a lot larger than most people think.

..and it clearly shows the differences!
Yesterday I tryed to paint some 1/3000 Skytrex civilian ships. Horrible! No details at all, badly cast - YAK! :(

I also painted a 1/6000 Magister Militum Scharnhorst which is way better then the Skytrex ships. It really depends on the manufactor.

What still drives me NUTS with historical mini companies, that you are not getting pictures of all the models! Basically you are always buying a black box... :x

As I'm sure you are aware, most of these companies are barely aware of the internet, they're almost all run by myopic old geezers slaving over a hot centrifugal caster in a dingy shed (or the business end of a similar idea). As mentioned, Navwar, one of the biggest miniature companies around for historic subjects, have only just achieved an official internet presence, to ask them to master digital photography or scanning would be too much...

Navwar’s shop (well what might the diminutive of shop be? ) in east London is amazing. I guess also with such a huge product range, and small potential market with most people knowing what they want it has not been worth it. But most likely I guess it is:

And they have an Archaic method of ordering stock, you have to print off the order sheet and post it to them. How very 1990's of them!!

Or maybe they can use a thirdparty, like Paypal. Its not rocket science, even if you've been snorting lead fumes for 30 years :P

Paypal is really easy to implement, I've done it for a couple of web sites.
The problem isn't how easy it is, Navwar don't WANT it. They LIKE the way things work at present. They understand it, and it's easy to control. Plus, if they increase sales, they increase their own workload. They've put up a spirited resistance to any form of change for a long time, and they'll not surrender to progress so easily. Look at virtually any other historical minis website - most of the older, longer-established ones are primitive at best.

Like I said....30 years of lead fumes :P

Look on the bright side, maybe they'll get too old, fed up and sell the business to someone in the US :)

I have to agree. I had a similar talk to Jon Tuffley of GZG. THEY like it the way it is. :(
So it is up to us customers, fans to promoted the good companies.

Which brings me to the question: Is Navwar better then Skytrex?

I don't know ... good way to start an answer I know :) ..... that's also why I am waiting to see a few more comparisions before buying more.

Almost all the ships I have are Navwar (mainly because they are produced in London. I have the entire Kriegsmarine and very good sized RN and USN fleets. They are ok and do the job, but it varries a bit between different ships. The detail is a bit lacking on some, e.g. the main turrets on some of the capital ships are just a bit of an amorphous lump with the different guns just about shown. On the otherhand some are rather good so I am not sure if you can make a single sweeping judgement.

Well, with regards to the websites, the Skytrex website is entirely internet-compatable - it has a shopping basket, and can take internet payments (by Credit Card anyway, I don't remember them taking PayPal.

With microarmour, I prefer Navwar (the old Heroics & Ros range). For ships, they're very much a case of personal preference, I feel. I'm not as sure as I was about this (it may not have been Skytrex/Davco, might have been someone else), but I remember the Navwar ships being less detailed, and less crisp, but the Davco ships were moulded with a vertical seam, meaning it ran along the top of every turret, and right over the bridge, and was damn hard to clean off. BUT were better moulded & crisper.

For 1/6000 scale Figurehead ships you, try this link: http://strangecargogames.com/index.php?cPath=301_26_593

Good photos and they didn't take too long to send me my order.

I just finished putting mine together tonight. They went together quite easily. The smaller ships had the bow bent a bit, but that wasn't hard to fix. I'm going to spray paint them black tomorrow and dry brush them grey for a basecoat. I'll post pictures when done.
