Determining Education for Robots

Zen Infidel

Mongoose
In book 9, Robots, on p. 16, it says that the robot's education is determined by the memory sticks that are installed. However, it doesn't say how to generate this number.

Page 24 says the Encyclopedia program determines the robots Education. Its possible one or both locations is in error. As page 24 actually gives an Education score, thats the one I would use.

Looking at the example robots through the book, just having memory sticks does not give them an Education score (they all have memory sticks, but almost all of the robots have an Edu of 0, if its even listed). The only example robot I found that had an education score of more then 0 was Ad-Unit 7.3 (page 78), and it is running the appropriate Encyclopedia program for its Education score of 15.

Excellent, I missed that. Thank you!

Actually, the entire section on memory sticks is very ambiguous to me. since directly underneath it gives you a chart for purchasing memory which seems to ignore completely what they just told you about memory sticks.

Mongoose Traveller has a lot of problems. Examples not matching the given rules (and sometimes have absolutely nothing in common with the rule they are supposed to be an example of), and other inconsistencies.

Memory sticks granting an Education score could of been in an earlier draft of the rules, but was changed and never fully corrected. It seems the only thing Memory Sticks was meant to do was to give space to store programs and other information. Nothing more.

OK, thank you. :)

I just encountered another question. How do you determine the society characteristic? I see that a beautiful cyborg will get a +4 to the society characteristic, but I can't find anything on the normal Society stat.

I believe the Personality Program is supposed to determine the robots Social Standing. Despite it saying it determines the robots intelligence. Yet another error.

Personality Program 1 is "dull and straightforward", while level 5 is "witty, charming and
perfectly smooth". And turning off the Emotion Generator automatically reduces the Personality Program to level 1. Emotion shouldn't be needed for Intelligence. Combined with the fact the higher levels of Personality Programs require the robot to have an Emotion Generator, leads me to believe that the Personality Program is meant to determine Social Standing, not Intelligence.

The Command Algorithm program determines Intelligence.

Edit: Or not. Later on, it implies the Command Algorithm determines Intelligence for drones, while Personality Program determines Intelligence for other robots. Which would mean there doesn't seem to be a way to determine the robots base Social Standing. Yet another problem with Mongoose Traveller.

I just figured, at the time when I read about it, that the robot's education equals the level of the app installed in it. And the memory defines how many apps can be installed at a certain tech level.

Read the chapter "Robots and the Universe." Robots don't have a Soc in most societies because they are either just tools(Age of Service) or slaves/second-class citizens (Age of Slavery). Most of the time the 3rd Imperium is in Age of Slavery. After that I'd think it would be up to the GM, I'd rule that after the Age of Slavery newly created Robots have a Soc of 0 modified by any addons and career improvements.
