Defansive fire

As i understand it, Yes. The lost of weapons from the same line entry ONLY (as i understand) counts when fired 'Offensively', so if used as a defensive ire system, AD can be reserved for seperate volley's of Drones - providing they cover the arc the drones are coming from.

- that how we've been playing it, anyway (and it's not slowed down the game noticably.

If I have 6 AD of phaser 3's and use 3 for one set of drones. Can I use the rest for another set of drones from a different ship
If using basic rules... no, its use 'em or lose 'em.
If using advanced rules, then yes - you are allowed to split weapon banks between multiple targets; but you still can not use 3 of them in Defensive Fire and the other 3 in Offensive Fire.

Or to put it in an example.

Say you have:

Phaser-1 3 AD SH
Phaser-1 2 AD T
Phaser-3 5 AD SH

These weapon banks are all in arc of incoming Drones.
You must decide (and declare) which banks are to be fired defensively and which offensively.
This is done when you need to fire them which may be on the ships attack phase OR when it is attacked if it hasn't fired yet.

Say you have not yet acted and you have 4 drones fired at you. You can declare that the Phaser-3s will be fired defensively and fire 4 of them, one each at the drones. The remaining phaser-3 can still be fired but ONLY defensively.
Then you activate the ship and attack. You can decide then what to do with the other phasers, if you use them offensively they must be fired or not fired then. Offensive phasers can only be used when the ship attacks and not afterwards.
If you decide and declare any of your remaining phasers to be defensive then the entire banks cannot be fired against the enemy but remain available for use against enemy drones or plasmas for the remainder of the turn.

Hope this helps
