Decks

Were all ships decks wood?

I have seen some models painted a wood colour and others grey!

If they are wood what colour would you use and if not wood what were they made from and what colour would that be?

Roland

someone will likely correct me on this, but most ships had either wooden or linoleum decking. you can paint it with a nice deck tan color and then do an inkwash and it will look great.

the USN on the other hand painted most of the deck surfaces of its ships (and the carrier flat tops as well) a dark blue/grey color. just mix up a really dark gray/blue color and it will look about right.

also note that some navies painted aerial recognition symbols on some of their decks. the bismarck had a you-know-what and the italians painted a red and white candy-stripe pattern. i'm not sure about others.

Thanks its Italians that I am painting and I have seen the Red and white stripe on the deck, still didn't stop their airforce from attacking them I believe!

I will paint the deck a tan colour and then add the red and white stripes, not that there are any Italian aircraft in VaS though.

Japanese decks were linoluem that's golden brown in color. The decks on IJN carriers were wood like everyone else.

This Forum could really use a "Search" function: there were several posts about this just last week, including links to sources of correct color samples.

Scroll around a bit and you may be able to find it... I can't recall the name of the OP, alas. :(

Was the wood used a light tan colour or a darker wood colour or did it vary?

Roland

For the Japanese? For the one IJN carrier I've painted I used a darker reddish brown (can't for the life of me remember exactly what color) one step lighter than GW terracotta. Brown wash, didn't highlight or drybrush the deck.

Mayber a stickied ship painting forum. Camo patterns, tutorials, ect.

As a general rule all destroyers and light cruisers had steel decks. Above that, it's one or the other. British CV's had steel decks, and so did the US escort carriers.

They added those after the first time it happened... RA and RM didn`t do many combined arms operations after that though... actually, the RM mostly served as a tourist attractive `kodak moment` in their harbours...

Thats not really all that fair (close, but not quite). If the Germans had given the Italians the fuel they'd needed instead of just moaning at them because they stayed in harbour things might have been different.
