Decals and basing fighters

Sooo...

Remember, if you might, those tons of fighters I talked about not wanting to take care of? Well, I've gotten around to it. Now, currently, this is what they are going to look like.

for a MUCH higher resolution, the image is linked, just click it. I love my camera, btw.

I used laser decal paper for the base, they were black, which looked fine, but I want something to make them all stand out. I'm using modern USAF fighter squadron insignias in sets of four (4 flights of 5 fighters each, so 20 fighters to a squadron, fairly close...) I had also printed out decals to put the matching insignia on the furies themselves. Unfortunatly, the decal paper is too rigid and doesn't conform to the shape of the mini.

Now, when I was a kid, I built tons of plastic models and I always remember those blasted decals folding and bending every which way and being a pain in my butt. When I got them to work with me, they would conform to details on the model just fine. This is what I need for my fighters, but I can't seem to find printable decal paper like that. Thus I'm coming to all of you here to see if anyone knows a brand that would work well. I believe I just have too thick of decal paper. Who knows.

btw... when you print to decal paper, remember, the white parts are really CLEAR... I had to paint the tops of the bases white in order to make it work. Now, as you can see, I need to clean up around the edges.

If all else fails, I'll end up painting on the insignias. I really don't want to do that.

The flight there is part of the 90th Fighter Squadron, Pair-O-Dice. In reality, they are a F-22 Raptor squadron stationed here in Alaska, at Elmendorf AFB. I get to drive by these guys every day. Such pretty planes.

http://www.decalpaper.com/ is a common place people go for their decal paper in addition to MicroMark http://www.micromark.com/

I have never had problems with too thick decals from custom paper but then I use a decal solvent to help too. MicroSol and Solvaset and common products in better hobby stores that soften decals to they snug around every bit of detail and you put them on the decal once it is in place.

Also you can get white decal paper so you wouldn't have to paint the bases white. The only issue would be that you have to cut the decal out exactly to size as any excess would show as white.

Yeah, I was thinking to myself about 10 mins ago, "Why the hell didn't I just get the WHITE decal paper...." I picked up clear, because for some reason, when I picked it up I wanted clear. Oh yeah. I wanted clear for other decals on my ships, like the EA insignias and such. Guess I'm just going to have to redo these...

I'll have to get some of that decal solvent as well. What brand of decal paper do you use? Having nice flexable decals to do the tops of my fighters would be awesome!

The units you see there are the 555th Triple Nickel, 90th Pair-O-Dice and the 25th. I'm using F-22s, F-15s and F-16s for my Auroras. I'm not too sure what I'm going to use for my Firebolts yet. I'll give anyone a cookie who can guess what airframe I'm using for my Thunderbolts :P

Ill get that cookie in the mail to ya!

I thought about it, I love wwii artwork. Pinups are hot! But its a lot easier to find nice, clean insignias of modern units. Also, a lot of the old units that flew the thunderbolt are now flying f-15s or f-16s.
