Is this similar to the old GW solo boardgame called (IIRC) Chainsaw Warrior? The plot was that you were a lone soldier sent into somewhere (New York?) where a dimensional rift had opened, spilling out horrible monsters and turning people into zombies. As you went through the game you encountered monsters to fight and picked up equipment (including the chainsaw of the title), but took damage in fights and used up your ammo. Insanely difficult game, I played it a dozen times and got frustrated with it because it seemed so random and I had little influence over the outcome.

Iron: I borrowed my friend's box of that - was really happy when I did finally beat it... wasted many happy hours that week...

Remember Chainsaw Warrior fondly.... awesome game.
