Cyberware/Gear book for Traveller

Even robots did not really get much mention until, I believe, a Special Supplement in JTAS then one of the last little black books though the excellent DGP series made more use of them.
.

Sorry, but Robots received treatments fairly early on. Best of JTAS had a design system, so one of the first 4 JTAS issues did.

Likewise, there was a Dragon article presenting robots as well, all well before Book 8.

I'd love to see cybernetics, nanotech, and biotech stuff. The main reasons people object to it are: 1)not plausible (which I can understand), and 2) they weren't in the original CT universe (which I think is a stupid reason to not want them).

Actually, Biotech and Nanotech are pretty much presumed to be "below the resolution" for the OTU, that is to say, they are the means of some of the stuff that exists. Like limb regrowth technology.

I have to agree with AKAramis here. I have always believe that the nanotech and Biotech were behind many things. Medical was one area I assumed was filled with Nanotech. I also believe some of the other manufacturing would use Biotech and Nanotech.

It is the blantent, in you face cyber that I think would not fit into the original Traveller feel. Now that does not mean I would not want to see cyber as a non-canon option. Just I don't think it needs to be added in as an official change.

...and 2) they weren't in the original CT universe (which I think is a stupid reason to not want them).

I have to also disagree with this point. I think it is fine to say that you want to keep an original idea or thing the way it was. It is not stupid at all to have a particular feel or taste that you like and want kept that way.

Now having said that, I think it is also not a bad thing to open your mind to new tastes and options. But leave them as options.

Well, hopefully a bunch of cyber info will be in one of the other settings. As for nano/biotech, I was thinking of more blatant modifications, like would be found in Transhuman Space.

I was thinking, rather then a book focused only on Cyber, how about one that touches on a few of the key SciFi genre? A chapter on each of a few sub-catagories. Say Cyber, Pulp, post-apocalyptic, SciFi Horro, etc.

Each chapter could offer some of the hallmarks of that catagory, what might be done to shift a story or adventure toward that catagory, list some examples of books or movies in that catagory, offer a short adventure seed or two, and maybe some unique equipment or vehicles or some such.

Just a thought.

I have some objections to what people say in this thread:

1) Why should cybernetics be subject to problems while in space/jumpspace. I find this to be a very lame thought personally. I mean if I am on a ship, I am certain that the protection that protects the electronics of said ship would protect me as well.

2) To the argument that gene/nano/bio-tech is not a big part of Traveller, what then is Anagethics, the Solomani uplift technology. I say just one thing to this: GenAssist.

3) Vampire ships cannot jump, please common? How did the virus spread? How do the characters trapped on the virus ship in OTU adventure vampire fleets get to promise?

4) The reason why there are not much cybernetics in the Imperium is that it is a social stigma. You have cybernetics that I see, then I do not see you as a human, but as a robot...It has nothing to do with physical laws, its just a way for certain players and gamemasters to hide behind.

5) Traveller (1st incarnation) came out in late 70's - they did not knowmuch about technology then. Just look at the size of computers and technology, and the low power outtake. - This was later copied into Megatraveller and soon...bringing the old 70's view of technology into the 21st century.

6) What we need is a modified TL tree with a more plausable thought. Kust think about how fast todays computer technology change, I mean a laptop with 1.7GB memory will not be modern that long. It will take some moths until a new and better computer is on the market. And in the imperium they have had about 5000 of resaerch, not to mention adding Vilani, Zhodani, Vargr and Aslan research to that.

7) The whole argument between die-hard Old school traveller fans and new modern is in my viewpoint quite pathetic. Instead of arguing - why not just play for fun. What goes on in my traveller universie will not affect yours anyway.

FYI: If a published book comes out and contradicts your traveller universe, Mongoose Publishing & Marc Miller will not be able to sue you for disrupting the Official thought they had.

To conclude my rant: Yes I would like such a book and yes I am a die-hard Traveller fan, I still have my first edition traveler in my bookcase and all other old books as well.[/i]
