Curse of Tantalus - campaign setting

Ok, Chapter 3 is up. I'll need to go back and tweak the fonts (damned embedding of fonts, playing up, grrr... ) but it's there. They might be ok on everyone else's PC than mine though...

The main characters have stats (Cpt Cunningham, Lt Babineau, Nadia Barrikova and Lord Murgo). Each character description is about a page or so, including the secondary characters. There is an odd typo or two that crept in, mainly because the writing gremlins staged a walkout last week over food rations, or something like that...

And finally, there's a little extra item, as I was asked for it. The map of the outpost from Chapter 2, but with the detail identified. Next week, I'll go back and fix Chapter 2's map. I thought it was more important to release Chapter 3 as promised.

Hope you all like...

Um,
EXCELENT!

Man you realy need to think about getting published!

Glad you like it. I'd love to be published, especially something Babylon 5 related. After having so much enjoyment from B5 over the years, thanks to JMS, it'd be nice to be able to contribute, albeit in a teeny-tiny way.

As I said, I might do a few odd things to go alongside the main Tantalus PDF's. I was also going to do a couple of 'Universe Today' sheets, for the main points of the story arc for Tantalus. But that's for much later...

Looks very good and well presented too :)

I will probably integrate this into my campaign. What sort of size party (& experience) is it aimed at?

The command characters average out around level 7, so I'd imagine that it's probably best for players up to about level 4 or possibly 5. If your play group is higher than that, then feel free to take the character stats and increase the levels. I'd try and keep the command characters at least a level or two above the main players. Groups of new characters (levels 1 or 2) shouldn't have a problem, as the command characters aren't at a really high level.

I pitched Captain Cunningham off the defined levels for the main B5 characters, in particular Jeffrey Sinclair. I put him at level 7, so he didn't get the 'Way of Command' special quality, partly to represent that he hadn't controlled all the infighting beneath him. Nadia Barrikova and Jean-Paul Babineau are of a lower level, but more vicious in terms of their political machinations. Abann Murgo could out-negotiate them all, in his sleep, to emphasise that when dealing with veteran Centauri diplomats the command staff on Tantalus are amateurs.

As for party size, well, that's up to you. I don't think the setting is particularly restricted on group size, apart from personal preferences. Me myself, I like a play group of about 3 or 4. Good balance of interaction and manageability. I once saw a D&D game of about 12-13 people back at University. I pitied the GM...

Thanks for the comments, and good luck!

You have done a great work, I have finally got some time over so I could read through it all and it is very well presented. I will definately use the station as a place for the characters to stay, meet etc. Most people, like myself, just make adventures and not big places like this, it's good to have antoher place to go that has a description. Ie, less work for the GM.

Keep up the good work, we need more like you :D

Just a wee bump for the boards.

Any news on when you may be incorporating the Centauri Republic Fact Book into your work?

Errr.... very soon?

I've adjusted the previous chapters slightly, taking out some of the Centauri related content and putting it into a separate chapter. I'll have the stats for House Murgo, House Durban and House Suriban; all are middle-tier or lower, just to not contradict the Centauri Fact Book. All Centauri characters (that have stats) will have the Status and Social Debt/Affluence statistics. In addition, there will be a new Centauri character, Burran, who uses the 'Facilitator' Prestige Class as found in S&P.

As well as that, I've got some additional PDF's I've had knocking around for a while. In addition to the outpost schematic PDF, there will be 4 page PDF on Chez Jules, one of the restaurant establishments on the Outpost. This can be picked up and dropped in any setting, not just for Tantalus, and even a features menu. This could be used for a location on Babylon Five with no real changes.

I've also got some hotel room plans for the Primus, one of the hotels on Tantalus. This sort of thing could help a GM explain the accomodation that a group coming to Tantalus could stop in. It's just a one pager, but the distances are marked on the diagrams, so as a GM you can know exactly how many feet away that Kallido Mancari is....

There will also be four 'Universe Today' PDF's, three for 2258 (one each from January, June and November, IIRC) and one for the start of 2259, with the news of President Santiago's assasination. Like the room plans, they're only one pagers, but might be useful to wave in the faces of players. With the exception of the Santiago one, all have at least one Tantalus related story, as I remembered from the show that 'Universe Today' is customisable, so any copy on the Tantalus Outpost would probably have themed news.

Most of these are finished, I'm just adding the finishing touches to the Centauri chapter. It's currently at eight pages.

Excellent. Let us know when you have updated the files.

Hi everyone - all uploaded now. Sorry about the delay, but I've had some niggling PC-type issues to sort out before I could upload the files.

Chapter 1 is unchanged, but all the rest have modifications to them, in particular Chapter 3, so much so I had to rename is as 3a. The Universe Today Pdf's are uploaded as well. Chez Jules and the Primus accomodation Pdf's are useful for any setting, including back on B5.

Chapter 4 is the newest one, and is fully compatible with the Centauri Republic Fact Book. There are three houses discussed in there. House Murgo are somewhat of a big fish in a little pond, knowing that any of the bigger houses (those in the Fact Book) would eat them for breakfast. House Suliban are a lower house, existing mainly to do House Murgo's dirty work for them. Finally, House Durban have been kicked around majorly, and ripped apart by two houses.

My ye olde version of the Ranger Prestige class, when I fix that damn cut-and-paste error, I'll upload it too  . It runs in at 5 pages, with a little precis on the Anla-Shok, a clarification of terminology and some detailed rules for establishing the Mora'Dum. I wanted the latter to be a staged event for a Ranger, and includes requirements for establishing the setting for the Mora'Dum, the pathway that the victim will take to get there (and have on their morale) and the desired outcome of the Mora'Dum. All the Ranger has to do then is achieve it...

Hope you like...

P.S. Apologies for the purple background on the site, but hey, it's a good Centauri colour :P

Once again thanks Chobbly for the great work ! Really helpful.

Wouldn't that make for a great serie of articles in S&P ? I think you should submit it to Old Bear. Or appear in a campaigns settings supplement ? A 128 or 160 pages containing 2 or 3 full-blown campaigns just like Curse of Tantalus, wouldn't that be a great idea !?

I would love to be involved in something like that. I'd buy it if it was done (whether I helped in it or not), mainly because I can see a real need for something to sit alongside the B5 station (I'm not saying it is or should be Tantalus, as it is a space station as B5 is a space station, but some kind of destination), as somewhere to go to so you can come back to B5, or vice versa.

On a similar note, I know that the Babylon Five Companion book has been pulled for a while, and don't have any inkling about what it contained. I would like to see an additional (not alternate) locale in such a book, alongside chapters on specific sections, perhaps even one on campaign design, martial arts (Aikido=Improved Disarm? Judo=Improved Grapple?), hit locations, a guide to the criminal underworld, perhaps even a little fiction in sidebars. The B5 station itself was covered fabulously in the Core Rulebook, and the ongoing season books. I think the Babylon Five Companion could 'branch out' a little, IMHO, being a companion in the definition of the word. :)

Redlaco, thanks for your kind words, BTW.

Don't know too much about the B5 RPG being more a fan of the show than a gamer, but thought i'd take a look. I'm amazed this isn't published, but it's really nice that you've posted it for everyone to use. Will be taking a greater interest in the future.
Thanks Chobbly

You do excellent work.

Looking forward to more.

One small point, while the black background for the GM notes with the white print look very nice could you try to find another combination to be a little less ink intensive? I also, find it a little bit harder to read than the standard print. Poor eyesight and poor printer most likely. :D

I was showing off your resturant to some of my players and one noted that Chef Jul had Skill Specialiaztion in Profession Chef (?) but didn't have any skill points in it.

Might want to change that.
