CONAN

Boowho?

Mongoose
Hi
I just ordered the Conan rpg game a few days ago and I can hardly wait to get it. From the looks of it, and from what I herd it seems like a kick ass game. Anyway while I await the arrival of the Conan rpg I find myself thinking about ideas for what the first adventure I’ll run for my players will be. I think I will be running a Jewels of Gwahlur type adventure. Has anyone else run an adventure based off this story? Can you guys throw some ideas at me of how to go about making an adventure like this? It doesn’t have to actually be a bout the Jewels of Gwahlur, just an adventure with that kid of mystery and political complexity to it.
Thanks

Hey, welcome to the game and the forums.

As far as Ideas go, I don't mean to sound like I'm blowing you off, but if you type just about anything into the search function of the forums, you're bound to get something you can use.

Have you run a RPG before? What books did you order? How many players will you have?

The Jewels of Gwhalur got recently a comic adaption by Darkhorse in three volumes. I read them at the weekend and can recommend them - you could not only visualize the locality for yourself, but for your players, too. It is VERY close to REH, no silly interpretation. The drawback in comparison to main comic line by Kurt Busiek is the lower quality of the illustrations; I'm far from being a comic expert, so I use the - maybe inappropriate - words "flat" and "cheap". But nonetheless the comic is enjoyable.

I only ordered the core rulebook. I’ll start with that and go from there. No, I haven't run a RPG before. I will have 2 or 3 players.

Yeah I have the darkhorse comic adaptation, I like it a lot. I like how close it is to REH's work.

Thanks for the help people.
If anyone else has an ideas let me know.

Something else that I found helpful was reading REH's stories. I read them long ago when I was a teenager and decided to re-read them in prep form my campaign. Mongoose has done a great job of recreating REH's Hyborian world. I would suggest reading some of his stories and see if you get any ideas.

Just a recommendation: make your first adventures realtively straight and not too complicated - if a supposedly good, but too complicated scenario crashes, it gets very frustrating (I speak out of my own experience a long time ago). A good start could be "Red Snows", a short and simple scenario that is available for free: start a search on this forum, I'm sure you'll find the www-link.

Thanks people. This has all been a lot of help. If anyone else has any suggestions please post them I can use all the help I can get.
I can't wait to play this game; I’m counting the days until it arrives.

If you liked Jewels of Gwhalur, you might want to look at REHs stories "Red Shadows", "Moon of Skulls" and "Black Vulmeas Vengence".

They cover expeditions into jungle areas, ruined cities, giant apes or snakes and fierce tribes.

I agree with the comments made by the other guys.

Most Conan stories start with a straight forward introduction eg Conan is after treasure, hiding from pursuers, fighting a battle etc.

For this type of scenario, I would have your PCs escorting a caravan from Shem to trade with Black Kingdoms tribes.

A hostile tribe falls on them, the PCs drive them off but their employer is killed. A few NPCs survive, some female .

Whilst attempting to find their way back to civilisation, they rescue an old BK tribesman from a Lion. In return, he offers to show them some ruins and treasure.

The heroes explore the ruins dodging pit traps and poisonous snakes.

On a black stone altar, they find heaps of skulls and emeralds.

The hostile tribe shows up in force, overpowers the PCs and threatens to sacrifice them on the ancient altar.

The old man is identified as the king of the tribe, driven into exile by the mad shaman who has seized power.

A hideous slithering noise comes from tunnels deeper in the ruin and a monsterous Crocodile emerges and attacks the tribesmen.

The PCs must free themselves, fight the tribe, kill the bad shaman, and hold off the creature (eg with fire) until they can escape.

The King is re-instated and offers to escort the heroes back to the Shemitish border. They retain any treasure they grabbed and live to fight another day.

Just one possible scenario.
