[CONAN] Pole Vault

First off, one of my players swears up and down that he's seen some rules for pole vaulting somewhere in the game. I've scanned around, and I haven't found anything covering pole vaulting.

Second: Which skill do you think should cover a pole vault attempt? Jump? Tumbling?

I guess it depends on whether you think pole vaulting is more STR based or DEX based. I'm leaning towards the former, so I think it should be based on Jump.

Thoughts?

I don't recall seeing anything specifically relating to pole-vaulting in any of the supplements I've read (though, mayhap I've simply forgotten reading it).

In any event, I think your instinct to treat a pole-vault attempt as a STR based Jump check is spot on.

Perhaps a variable circumstance bonus on the Jump check based on the length of the pole and the material it's made from? That's just off the top of my head, mind. Seems the simplest way to go, though.

Here's something I found on the net:

Vault

This ability allows a Dragoon Lancer to effectively pole vault using a polearm giving him a +4 to Jump checks. This ability does not apply whenever there is a low roof or the Dragoon would not have time to draw his weapon and effectively use it, such as in surprise events or to avoid traps. Vault can also be used to accomplish the following in battle using a jump check: DC 15: Vault over a large or smaller creature or object provoking an attack of opportunity (+5 foot vertical) DC 20: Vault over a large or smaller object or creature without provoking any attacks (+7 foot vertical) DC 25: Vault over a huge creature provoking an attack (+9 foot vertical) DC 30: Vault over a huge creature without provoking an attack (+12 foot vertical)

And this...

Pole Vaulting

When using a balance pole as described above, a cat burglar can pole-vault, which grants a +5 circumstance bonus to jump checks where applicable. A jumping pole also halves the difficulty of a high jump up to the length of the pole.
